Historia
Two o'clock was missing. In an alternate Victorian world controlled by clock towers, a damaged clock can fracture time - and a destroyed one can stop it completely. It's a truth that 17-year-old clock mechanic Danny Hart knows all too well; his father has been trapped in a Stopped town east of London for three years. Though Danny is a prodigy who can repair not only clockwork but the very fabric of time, his fixation with staging a rescue is quickly becoming a concern to his superiors.

The thing the machines consume is us. Ready to lease out your mind? Or pay for your next meal with involuntary ads? The Closet Full of Time collection contains five short stories that speak to that sinking feeling that we're serving the machines instead of the other way around. That our inventions are taking things we can’t afford to lose.

I really liked this collection of short stories. It makes one ponder how much technology is affecting our innate humanness.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Almost makes me want to be a Republican again
Revisado: 03-23-24
I officially left the Republican Party in early 2016, when the fervor around Donald Trump was ramping up. I had seen too much about him that scared me and knew I couldn’t be part of a party that supported That Man. In the years since, nothing about the Republican Party has ever made me want to go back. Their deification of Trump is an insult to all thinking and feeling persons everywhere. Liz Cheney’s book has convinced me that it’s still possible for a person to be conservative, Republican, and honorable at the same time. She is a testament to her party, her country, and her God.

If CS Lewis we’re still alive, this guy would be kissing him on the mouth
Revisado: 02-09-24
First, the performance: The lecturer was too fast, tripping over his own tongue, it’s like he never learned to pace himself. Give him a twenty minute lecture time instead of fifteen and he could get the same amount of words out, but maybe with a breath or two thrown in gratis. You could hear him panting, rushing, and tripping over his own words. And also, I have to say it, it’s not pronounced “Ass-lan”, no piece of media has ever made the lion of Narnia sound like a butt.
Content: Good god, is this man preachy in the first half of his lectures. He gets away from Lewis’ life and writings and starts putting his own beliefs into it and only briefly referencing his source material, especially when theology comes into play. Falls into his own trap by assuming that x+y=z when it could just as easily equal f or n or b, solely (it seems) because he heard a metaphor somewhere. He takes a lot of hearsay and anecdotes as fact and uses those “facts” to support his own conclusions. There’s also way, way too much “our kids aren’t taught morals these days” without expanding on the “why” or “what” or “how.” It’s an opinion thrown out often without anything to back it up besides the lecturer’s own prejudice and his assumption of the prejudice of others. A good bit of the first half of the lecture series is purely “this is what I believe and I’m pretty sure Lewis believed it too.” That’s when he’s not fawning over Lewis as “the greatest theologian possibly of all time.”
I did learn a bit more about CS Lewis than I’d known previously, but would have liked to learn more about the man, and not about the lecturer’s feelings and beliefs. Still, I did enjoy a revisit to some of my favorite books.
Oh, and fellow? Shasta was from Archenland, not Narnia. You made that mistake more than once. Thought you ought to know.

Historia
Nitara Desai has spent her life negotiating international agreements, easing points of conflict, and averting disasters. Worst-case scenarios belong in her nightmares, not the IEC’s daily reports. On a calm day, being a director at the International Energy Consortium only requires fixing CarbonCon translators for flustered Brazilian delegates. A thankless job, but the world is still drowning in CO2—there’s no choice but to keep treading.

I really enjoyed it. The narrator added some undercurrents that enhanced the story. Which is brilliant, as I said. I loved that the characters were entirely non-human and the author really embraced the differences. The culture of the creatures is amazingly well thought out. I wish I could see Dragon art and Octopus displays in real life! Arak and Scree are surprisingly relatable, for a dragon and an octopus. The story is well thought out and extremely interesting. I look forward to books two and three in audio form of the author wants to continue this route; but I’ll be ordering them in hard copy in the meantime. This is a series I’ll want on my shelf to reread in future!

I came for the Halloween vibes (l read/reviewed in October), stayed for the amazingly gooey love story. Lorne and Xander are absolutely made for each other and I couldn’t stop grinning like a loon. Well put-together plot, interesting and wholesome. Definitely going on my favorites list!
