Historia
Meant to be a last-minute anniversary gift for her then boyfriend (and now husband), the highly energetic and loud-mouthed Vizla puppy named Harlow turns out to be the best snap decision twenty-year-old Taylor ever makes—and the beginning of the most epic friendship she ever has. As Wolfe’s resistance to 9-5’s and traditional adulthood grows, Harlow becomes the perfect companion for her eccentricities in a world that thrives on conformity.

Someone who loves dogs & kids!
Revisado: 04-02-24
It’s so refreshing to find a book that loves dogs and kids, since so often it’s one or the other. I can relate to the authors love of her dog while also realizing a husband and motherhood is definitely something she wants out of life. The author incorporates good humor and dives into raw emotional stories that held my interest well enough. I think this story would have flowed a lot better if the author told it in a linear timeline, the bouncing back and forth took away from the story. And while I too make up pretend thoughts on my animals behalf, the full blown back and forth conversations was off-putting.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Returned 1.5 Hours in
Revisado: 03-14-24
Narrator was good, no complaints there. But I found the story awful. I paused an hour and a half through to read GoodRead reviews and all the 1 star reviews perfectly described my own feelings on the book. Go read those reviews for a good detailed review. From what I read, I’m glad I returned it at this point and didn’t invest any further time into it.

Historia
For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris - Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut. Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives - the ones we'd like to pretend never happened - are in fact the ones that define us. In Let's Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes readers on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor.

It’s like Cards Against Humanity….
Revisado: 02-05-23
This author reminds me of the Cards Against Humanity card game. When you first play it - it’s so shocking, funny and like no other game you played before…but it gets old fast. Continually saying and doing illogical things just for shock value isn’t funny anymore, it’s just tiresome and annoying. The style of storytelling is repetitive with so much rambling. Most of the vaj jokes were over the top cringey. Being vulgar just to be vulgar without a solid story to tie it in is just lame middle school humor. So I liked the beginning but it just was too exhausting with minimal substance to justify continuing on.

Worth the listen
Revisado: 11-21-22
I discovered this book through a local posting because I too live in Milwaukee(as the author does). When listening to the book, I discovered I was born the same year as Laura. Little connections that helped really bring home the reality to this story.
It’s an incredible story, both in what transpired and how it was written. I knew it would be an emotional book but it still catches you, especially with an unexpected twist. I really respect and admire an author that can acknowledge and apologize for their own faults as this author does throughout the entire book. Something that I think can often be overlooked in a memoir but is oh so crucial in truly gaining a solid perspective. I also love a book with an upbeat at peace ending.
It took me a little bit to get used to the narrators voice but I do always appreciate when the narrator reads it themselves.
I’ve heard mixed reviews on organ donation and it’s nice to hear a positive experience.

A lot of missing information
Revisado: 05-31-22
I admire the author for having the courage to share this story. It certainly was not an easy childhood and I imagine it’s especially difficult to share when this abuse is done by your own family. If I’m being honest, there is too much missing information to get the full picture of this story. It seems to jump from horrible abuse to quick forgiveness and it’s all okay in a blink of an eye. I imagine a lot of processing and emotional work needed to be done to get to that point and the author doesn’t share that side. I feel we are missing a lot of info about the brothers and other people’s perspectives on this whole situation. I also feel like other aspects of the authors life like romantic relationships, friendships and the ability to be successful in school, college and work were likely impacted by this childhood abuse and an update on what became of her life as an adult could have added substantially to the story.

Meh
Revisado: 03-07-22
I don’t fully trust any memoir where the author can’t fully address the story from all angles, including situations or moments one responds in a way we’re not proud of. The author likes to present herself in a good light the entire book which makes me hesitant to believe this is the full story. I also feel perspectives from others involved in this story was greatly lacking.
If you Google other reviews, you’ll find many of the statistics she used in the book are inaccurate.
Narration was difficult to listen to. I did get used to it about halfway through but it takes patience,

Push through it- worth it!
Revisado: 10-09-18
So I found the narration and some of the writing style absolutely painful to get through. I’m all about envisioning what a dog may think or feel to gain perspective but some of it was just over-the-top. The beginning was the worst and I almost returned the book. Stick with it, you get use to the narration and the writing style gets better with less descriptions of what someone thinks happened. I learned more facts and information about the case and the awful side of it is not gory so you can get through it. I’m glad I learned more about this situation and that many dogs had a happy ending.

4/5
Revisado: 05-14-18
This book was especially interesting and heartwarming to me since three of my rescue dogs were strays in the South, brought up to the Midwest by large truck transports, where they were eventually adopted. I enjoyed learning more about the process, something I understand and appreciate much more.
The book had some dry moments and repetitive moments. I honestly think Audible glitched the recording or something because the last chapter and epilogue were literally word for word the same.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 01-05-18
I was young when the story of Pat Tillman initially happened so I was unaware of his story until this year. Raised a proud patriotic American, I was extremely naive about the darker side of the military. This story is truly heartbreaking but important information for people to understand. The truth and accountability is what is right and I admire the family’s dedication and strength to fight for that.
