This was whelming. I was whelmed.
Revisado: 11-20-24
I loved Tucker’s Immortal Great Souls and plowed through them. I thought i would try this. I think maybe this book doesnt convert well to audio.
It was really hard distinguish names, and the narrator doesnt have a great range (unlike the masterful Nick Podehl in IGS) so everyone kind of sounds the same.
Also, the story is very linear, We arent worried about conflict with other people characters known or unknown goals. Bad guy? Beat it up.
I wont be listening to the rest of this series, but i cant wait for the rest of IGS.

Very Brandon Sanderson with elements of other well known series.
Revisado: 10-31-24
Kinda a mix of mistborn magic system, with stormlight world elements. Then kind of red rising training system with levels and houses to join and such.
Author put elements of familiar elements in other books together pretty well.
Nick Podehl will always be awesome.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Not my kind of book, and really liked it
Revisado: 08-27-23
I am used to stories with more complicated storylines. Where things are happening beyond the main characters view.
So let me tell you the ONLY issue i had with this book. The entire story reads like “i did this thing, and then… and then… and then…”
With that said….
First of, the narrator is freaking excellent. Wow. Hats off on the accents.
This is the book that Hillbilly Elegy wanted to be. The main character is extremely likeable, the cast of characters are incredibly relatable even if you don’t understand their choices, especially at first.
The writing leads up to the end parts where the true statements are made about drug crisis in rural America and the conflict between “city” and “country”
In no way is this book preachy. Even if you don’t want to get mired in those two topics, i would still recommend this book.
Wasnt sure what i was getting into with this book but am glad i read it.

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Good.
Revisado: 08-08-23
Not sure why its written in present tense. Maybe it has something to do with the stuff we learn at the end?
I also found that the main character being skilled at everything to be a little tiring.
That said, good read, and fun adventure. Looking forward to next one.

linear, simplistic, poor use of a credit
Revisado: 05-13-23
I have fully enjoyed most of Taylor's work. I found Bobiverse entertaining and funny. I enjoyed Roadkill. So let's just say I'm not new to Taylor's work.
This book, however, is a dud.
Infinite parallel timeline books are a dime a dozen, mixing it with a global catstrophe for urgency is ok. But that was the last book. This book... is just a series of "and then this happened", no parallel story lines, No complicated characters. You have the incel, the jock, the gangster, the old fashioned conservative politician...I mean come on.. its just a basket of tropes who move from one place to another.
So the book kind of just is a treatise on "which political and economic models for society are best?" But without the knowledge of those differences. Taylor conflates anarchism with chaos (most people do, but most people don't write about it), and doesnt present actual anarchist solutions, nor cover anarchocommunism vs anarchocapitalism (even though he has unwittingly demonstrated the latter in the bobiverse, yes, unwittingly...I had a twitter exchange with him). He mentions free market capitalism and libertarianism without a distinction. His discussion about communism vs socialism was a terse at best and ignorant at worst. i mean if a major point of conflict in your story is about the development of political systems...you'd think you'd spend some time learning about them and exploring them. Especially when the rest of the story is just a series of tropes.
He starts with a governance model and ends with the same one without describing why he, or his characters actually chose it... I don't mind the exploration of political and economic models in books. It can be interesting, but this wasnt. but it wasnt the back drop to interesting characters and interesting conflicts either.
Anyway, meh. The narrator is pretty good.

Jonas kills people...with his mind. He reaches out, focuses for a moment, and feels a snap of pain between his eyes. Then his target falls over dead: a hole in the center of their brains. The cause of death is unknown to all aside from Jonas, and his lone companion, Bubbles, a sarcastic AI with aspirations to be more human, or a serial killer. One of the two. Maybe both. Jonas calls his ability...mind bullet.

My first jeremy robinson book, and clearly not the last
Revisado: 10-11-22
I have lists to over 200 audiobooks. This book is top five for action, creativity and laugh out loud moments. I truly enjoyed it. I loved it even more knowing i took a risk not having heard of the author before, but also seeing commenters who got butthurt after seeing themselves in this book.
There is no preachy woke text in here, the references to gender politics, white supremacy and so forth are freaking funny. Believe me, As a 50+ year old libertarian, i get the frustration modern gender and race politics, but this book was awesome about the utter preposterous nature of some positions people hold on it and i thank the author for putting that stuff is such a funny light. Great work!
Slight spoiler:
the 4th wall breaking by the AI was caught me off guard, i literally spit out the coffee i was drinking due to laughter.
Looking forward to my next robinson book.

Historia
King Philip VI was the first French King of the famous House Valois, and he inherited France at the height of its power. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t remain that way for long. His fierce rivalry with King Edward of England destabilized the region, threw France into turmoil, and launched one of Europe's most infamous wars: The Hundred Years’ War. Originally born into minor nobility, Philip was never considered to one day be king. The life journey of Philip VI, the first king of House Valois, is a truly fascinating story filled with unsuspecting inheritance.

He also happens to be a level 100 healer, level 100 thief, level 100 diplomat and gets everyone to do what he wants.
