Kirk's move away from Scotland is marvellous !
Revisado: 02-16-25
Whoever thought "JD Kirk" had such a plot - such a STORY ! - in him ?
I didn't, for one.
As a once fan of Kirk's DCI Jack Logan who gave up on that series after somewhere around the 17th or 18th book because of an irritating and silly character the writer insisted on featuring, I had thought not to find myself reading anything more of his.
I bought this audiobook because of David Tennant, incredibly not noticing the author until the transaction was done.
Sooooo glad I did !
The afore-mentioned plot has been thought out with great care and planning: there's not a single event or item that doesn't eventually fall into place. At one point I was thinking "Oh, I was right !" in smug fashion, only to find that I was wrong !
I do hope Barry writes more stand-alone books of this calibre.

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

A wonderful pairing of author and narrator
Revisado: 11-08-24
Since I first found Gildart Jackson reading Peter Grainger's brilliant novels I have listened to them in fear of their endings: not because I've ever had the faintest doubt that they would all be completely satisfying, but because reaching them has meant a long, long wait until the next.

Very disappointed
Revisado: 05-20-24
The mystery's being solved by the killer's lengthy explanation is not what I expect from Louth.
Craig Gillard was a much more interesting lead.

Craig in good form
Revisado: 10-05-23
Good storyline and all the familiar personnel. Louth surprises with one of them - a goodie becoming less admirable.
And if he's done a Henning Mankell - as in 'The Troubled Man' and the way it ended - I shall be really disappointed.

Historia
Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

I so love these books !
Revisado: 09-19-23
Grainger's writing is really individual. I absolutely love everything about it - his characters, or course, but so much more ..
One of my likes is the way he doesn't tie everything up neatly, but leaves us to simply imagine what probably happened.
And another one - a really important one ! - is Gildart Jackson's narrations: this bloke is .. BRILLIANT.
I think perhaps this has been my favourite so far in the DC Smith library of novels.

Another brilliant Harper story
Revisado: 09-11-23
Really, this woman is almost TOO talented a writer. I mean, I'm now totally bereft until she manages another title. :(
It did take me longer to get into The Survivors, because I wasn't totally enthralled with any one character. Didn't take too long, though, before I was pulled in; and then it was another Jane Harper novel that had me listening far too late at night, rivetted ..

Historia
Three brothers, one death, a fenceline stretching to the horizon. Two brothers meet at the border of their vast cattle properties under the unrelenting sun of outback Queensland. They are at the stockman's grave, a landmark so old, no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron. The Bright family's quiet existence is thrown into grief and anguish. Something had been troubling Cam. Did he lose hope and walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects....

Revisado: 09-07-23
I started on The Lost Man with a lack of enthusiasm, as I'd fallen in love with Aaron Falk and wanted to read more of him.
As it turned out, Nathan Bright is also a winner: nothing like Falk, but just as interesting. Now I'm hoping that Harper might decide to follow up with more books featuring Bright !
