Played it Twice!
Revisado: 06-10-24
I bought this book along with three others to listen to on a trip between southern Oklahoma and Hollywood California. I abandoned one of my books to play this one a second time. I read Dune in 1980 while a sophomore in high school and even then I thought it was very unusual in the way it was written and the kind of content it embraced. This book shed even more light on the groundbreaking book that was Dune. It's hard for us to imagine when this kind of science fiction didn't exist at all. The dessert world with giant sandworms, the valuable spice that brought people to this hostile environment, and the power struggles were all completely new. This book reminded me of all the things about this series, and the movies, both made and unmade, that will now be with us forever. If you're a fan of Dune, you'll be a fan of this book

Mercury, a lifeless victim of the Sun’s expanding power. Venus, once thought to be lush and fertile, now known to be trapped within a toxic and boiling atmosphere. Mars, the red planet, doomed by the loss of its atmosphere. Jupiter, twice the size of all the other planets combined, but insubstantial. Saturn, a stunning celestial beauty, the jewel of our Solar System. Uranus, the sideways planet and the first ice giant. Neptune, dark, cold and whipped by supersonic winds. Pluto, the dwarf planet, a frozen rock.

If you are fascinated by our solar system and its exploration, this is the book for you. It covers each and every probe mission ever sent out to explore our solar system. A better collection of facts and speculation on the history of our solar system has not yet been written.

I'm a big fan of When Worlds Collide, and I was always curious about how the people of Earth that made it to a new world would set up a new society and start repopulating our species. That's not the book the authors wrote. I didn't find it exciting, or believable. Certainly, no new proposals for creating a better society the second time around. Shallow.

Pinion, Minnesota: a metropolis of all of 700 souls. Nothing ever happened there - until the mayor of sorts (campaign slogan: "I'll Do What I Can") and a buddy come up with a scheme to put Pinion on the map. They'd heard of a place where a floating image of the Virgin Mary had turned the whole town into a shrine, attracting thousands of pilgrims. And all those pilgrims needed food, shelter, all kinds of crazy things, right? They'd all get rich! What could go wrong? When the dead body shows up, they find out, and that's only the beginning of their troubles - and Virgil Flowers'....

Historia
In August 1968 NASA made a bold decision: In just 16 weeks, the United States would launch humankind's first flight to the moon. Only the year before, three astronauts had burned to death in their spacecraft, and since then the Apollo program had suffered one setback after another. Meanwhile, the Russians were winning the space race, the Cold War was getting hotter by the month, and President Kennedy's promise to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade seemed sure to be broken.

Outstanding
Revisado: 05-22-24
This account of one of our greatest achievements read better than any fiction. How scary it must have been to be the first people to leave the Earth a quarter of a million miles behind them and trust that engines would fire and the aim was true so they could make it back home alive. I left this book appreciating these men and their accomplishments a lot more than I did before listening.

Not Funny Joke Book
Revisado: 05-22-24
Really people, don't waste your time or money on this one. The jokes are not funny and the reader is awful. Hearing a bad joke once was bad enough but several of these not funny jokes were repeated over and over.

Down to Earth
Revisado: 05-22-24
This book walked through the writing, then the making of this movie in such a way I felt like I was standing on the sidewalks of New York City watching the film crew at work. These were people making movies, and not the high and mighty described in some books about the great directors and the larger than life stars. Real people chasing a dream, and unsure at times if they pulled it off or missed the boat altogether. I've seen other books in the Audibles library written by Glen Frankel and I plan to listen to them as well.

The author got it right. So many times I get books about the movie business where dates are wrong or details are wrong. Everything in this book was spot on. This book covered the widescreen era of the 1950's and 1960's, which most film history books ignore. If you're interested in the business end of Hollywood, especially in distribution, you'll love this one

Audrey Hepburn is an icon like no other, yet the image many of us have of Audrey - dainty, immaculate - is anything but true to life. Here, for the first time, Sam Wasson presents the woman behind the little black dress that rocked the nation in 1961. The first complete account of the making of Breakfast at Tiffany's, Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M. reveals little-known facts about the cinema classic: Truman Capote desperately wanted Marilyn Monroe for the leading role; director Blake Edwards filmed multiple endings....
