Historia
Forty years’ accumulation of art, antiques, and family photographs are more than just objects for Stanley Peke - they are proof of a life fully lived. A life he could have easily lost long ago. When a con man steals his houseful of possessions in a sophisticated moving-day scam, Peke wanders helplessly through his empty New England home, inevitably reminded of another helpless time: decades in Peke’s past, a cold and threadbare Stanislaw Shmuel Pecoskowitz eked out a desperate existence in the war-torn Polish countryside, subsisting on scraps, dodging Nazi soldiers.

Tedious and plodding
Revisado: 02-02-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Action that moved the story forward instead of endless, description and reflection upon motivations. Also annoying were the endless hints at what the protagonists 'secret past' hid, without ever really getting on with it, or giving you clues to advance your theories.
Has Moving Day turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
Have you listened to any of Christopher Lane’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narrator is very good.
What character would you cut from Moving Day?
The characters are ok. The problem is that the story movement is glacial.
Any additional comments?
This plot idea had such promise. It held the promise of what I call 'the superman' model of storyline. A mild mannered character is dealt an injustice that causes outrage, when suddenly the character is revealed to be not what he seems but rather, the man of steel! I think this story was heading in this direction but after endless hours of description of feelings, the appearance of motel rooms both grand and ordinary, the reflections on a life gone by and ... after all, what is the meaning of a life gone by and the possession of 'things', with little to no progress in the story; I had to give up on this book.

A rich and enthralling tale
Revisado: 05-31-08
The publisher's review does not do justice to the intricacies and depth of this novel. I loved this book on many levels. First of all, there is the humor. Descriptions of the ideal housewife of the 40s and 50s are wryly amusing, but at the same time, isn't simple goodness and striving to please an important essence of a good marriage? The dynastic tale of the Michelson family is intensely interesting. Is there truly a curse at work, or are the 3 generations we come to know so intimately, predestined to live lives shaped by their own foibles, or in some cases by their very strengths. This book is part mystery and suspense, part cautionary tale, part allegory of hope and ultimate redemption.
If you enjoy good story telling you will enjoy this book.

Historia
Here is Pat Conroy's powerful, captivating, and highly acclaimed best seller. He sweeps us into the turbulent world of four young men, friends, cadets, and bloodbrothers, and their days of hazing, heartbreak, pride, and betrayal. We go deeply into the heart of the novel's hero, Will McLean, a rebellious outsider with his own personal code of honor, who is battling into manhood the hard way.

Revisado: 07-21-07
I wish I could write a review as beautifully as the word pictures painted by Pat Conroy in his books. I enjoyed Beach Music very much, enough that I wanted to try another book by Conroy. Looking over my available choices on Audible, I considered - hmmm - a sports story or a military institute story. Egad, neither one of those topics is exactly in my area of interest, but I decided to give Lords of Discipline a try. In the first hour, I was hooked. By the middle of the book I was finding it difficult to put down. With only two hours left before the ending, I had to give in and just listen to the conclusion.
Conroy's writing sytle is lyrical, evocative and compelling. The narrator complements the beautiful writing of this book with fine and varied characterizations. An excellent read.

What a fun read. The story is a skillful tale that blends and blurs reality and unreality; and which is which? Ultimately all seem to be only facets of the same reality. Maybe that is too ambitious a description. It is enough to say that the story is interesting, mysterious, comedic, thought provoking but above all entertaining throughout. The narrator is excellent, and every character has their own personality and voice. I enjoyed this book very much.

This book is pure and beautiful storytelling. The characters are interesting, mysterious and appealing. The book reveals itself at a measured pace that irresistably draws you deeper and deeper into the storyline. It is a pleasure to read from beginning to end.

Historia
An intricate tale of love, haunting memories, and renewal, Second Glance begins in current-day Vermont, where an old man puts a piece of land up for sale and unintentionally raises protest from the local Abenaki Indian tribe, who insist it's a burial ground. When odd, supernatural events plague the town of Comtosook, a ghost hunter is hired by the developer to help convince the residents that there's nothing spiritual about the property.

I read Plain Truth and My Sisters Keeper before giving Second Glance a look. Tales of the supernatural immediately raise my "I'm not going to like this" alarm, but you know - it was my favorite book of the three. Very enjoyable. I thought the length of the story was just fine and it ended when it should have. I am sure I will read this book again.

This was one of those books that captured and held my attention from the first page. I looked forward to my commute or any of the other excuses that let me spend time with it. With one hour remaining in the book, I set aside all excuses and blasted through to the end in one continuous sitting. Good ending too. My biggest regret is that there are no more unabridged titles by this author available on Audible.

Revisado: 08-06-06
This is my first Ludlum book. Call me dense but the plot wasn't predictable to me. Maybe after I read a few more of this author's novels I would have something different to say, but as a newbie, I enjoyed the twists and turn of the story. I will be trying out another Ludlum. This story definitely held my attention the entire length of the book. 4 instead of 5 because my suspension of disbelief was a bit taxed at times, but I don't mind enduring a little incredulity for an entertaining thriller.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

No plot, no magic
Revisado: 07-20-06
Long audio books don't intimidate me, in fact I prefer them. There are many good reviews for this book, and scattered among them a number of bad reviews. I took a chance on the good reviews and downloaded the book. After 7 plus hours of listening, I had to return to the reviews to evaluate them in context of what I had heard.
The bad reviews pretty much hit the mark. If there is any real plot it must be waiting to make it's appearance in part 2 of the download. As for magic, there sure is a lot of talk about it, but very little of it on display. I don't often give up on a book, but I have learned that when I start telling friends that "I am still waiting for it to get good", it usually never does. This one took an early exit into the magical bit bucket. There must be an audience for this kind of droning story out there, but if you are at all doubtful about whether it is for you, consider the other negative reviews which all pretty much agree on the same shortcomings, and in that, they are accurate.

Very Entertaining.
Revisado: 04-10-06
Pompeii is entertaining from start to finish. I found nothing at all distracting about the narrators accent, and in fact thought that John Lee was an excellent narrator. The story line was interesting all the way through. Best of all, the book piqued my interest enough in the subject that I found myself researching and learning a wide variety of things about that time in general and about that event in particular. I highly recommend the book.
