Historia
A dying man is murdered. A rich man's wife agrees to pay $3,000 for the return of a stolen box of rocks. A series of odd, inexplicable events is haunting Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police and drawing him alone into the Bad Country of the merciless Southwest, where nothing good can survive...including Chee. Because an assassin waits for him there, protecting a 30-year-old vision that greed has sired and blood has nourished. And only one man will walk away.

My Favorite
Revisado: 02-04-25
I've listened to this book a couple of times and it gets better each time. I like all of Hillerman's work. The first several novels about Leaphorn and Chee are the best in my opinion. People of Darkness is really excellent.

Historia
The car fire didn’t kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del and confounded by the prime suspect’s refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this outrage than what appears on the surface as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune.

Jim Chee is irritating
Revisado: 12-31-24
I've read all of Hillerman's books back in the day. And love to listen to George Guidall narrate them. His voice is weak in this performance which is a bit distracting. But the character Jim Chee is really irritating in this book, he tells the killer info that leads to another death, out of stupidity. Some books has Chee being a better cop and doing better. Overall it's a good story.

Historia
Two Native American boys have vanished into thin air, leaving a pool of blood behind them. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police has no choice but to suspect the very worst, since the blood that stains the parched New Mexican ground once flowed through the veins of one of the missing, a young ZuNi. But his investigation into a terrible crime is being complicated by an important archaeological dig and a steel hypodermic needle.

One of the best
Revisado: 11-07-24
I read this book many years ago when it was first published. Tony Hillerman brings the landscape to life as a character in his books. And George Guidall is the best narrator of Hillerman's books. I love this book.

Too much
Revisado: 10-16-24
I've read all of the Vera novels. So I like the series and the character. But I did not like the author's constant writing of Joe's and Vera's thoughts about themselves and each other, self doubt and mental gymnastics of their emotions. And Vera was pretty unpleasant in this book. Can't they just get on with it? Solving the crime that is.

Historia
It's June in Montreal, and Dr. Temperance Brennan, who has left a shaky marriage back home in North Carolina to take on the challenging assignment of Director of Forensic Anthropology for the province of Quebec, looks forward to a relaxing weekend in beautiful Quebec City. First, though, she must stop at a newly uncovered burial site in the heart of the city. The remains are probably old and only of archeological interest, but Tempe must make sure they're not a case for the police. One look at the decomposed and decapitated corpse, stored neatly in plastic bags, tells her she'll spend the weekend in the crime lab.

yes and no
Revisado: 04-29-24
Overall, I like the Kay Scarpetta books, at least when I read them when they were first published. But listening to them now, I wish I could skip over parts. The gruesome details of sadistic killings is one to skip over. Other parts are just improbable, like instead of getting the State department to investigate computer break-ins, Scarpetta problem solves with her 10 year old niece.

good story
Revisado: 01-10-24
I had read this book a long time ago and had seen the television programs about it. Like all of Mankell's books, it is an intriguing story. The one thing with many of his Wallander books is how stupid the character can be, exasperating in his screwing up. In this book, his daughter Linda is just like him! I like the narrator okay but I don't like Dick Hill's narration. To each his own.

Too many characters, I couldn't remember them all. Who did the earlier murders? Lame ending.. I have read many of the Wexford novels and like them. But am very disappointed in this book.
