Author captures the quirks with humor
Revisado: 11-11-24
How to equal the Thursday Murder Club? This is it. Author entertains as well as intrigues with wonderful characters across generations. I'm an older reader so the respect for creative oldsters is particularly enjoyable. This is an author to follow and hope he continues the magic. Reader/performer is perfect - enhanced my enjoyment.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Read if you want to understand your own story
Revisado: 10-07-19
The power of beliefs throughout history explained in a way that is easily understood. Can seem to undermine a sense of the absolute truth of our core beliefs but understanding the mechanics frees us to see clearly and take charge of our destiny. Timely because there are forces at work that are unrelenting in their attacks on humankind's instincts to community over conflict.

Michael Page saved this for me but too dark
Revisado: 10-07-19
Incredible narrator - one of my all time favorites brings multiple weird characters to life. I admired the creativity of the writer in creating an alternate reality but he lost me when he persisted in going to very dark places with very little relief throughout a very long convoluted story. I felt jarred on many occasions because of the sudden contrast between light fun and disgusting depravity. He really likes "piss" for example to describe everything and to literally marinate everything and everyone in. I slogged through but won't be re-reading and I won't be looking for any more of his titles.

Addictive, great fun, great character development
Revisado: 09-29-19
Add me to the fan club. I will be reading and listening to this entire series (I'm up to #5) and will be interested to see if the TV series measures up. George Guidall is a miracle worker on these - no surprise but his performances of all the characters truly brings these stories to life. And the descriptions of the places put the reader in the ambiance. Highly recommended.

More sex than anything else - good sex but
Revisado: 09-29-19
Great performance by Abby Craden - really did the various people well including male characters, But I expected more of a police procedural and less of a romance and, while the sex was well done, there was more than I expected from the reviews and the descriptions. I would rate is highly if I was a big fan of romance novels but I'm more into mysteries and thrillers and I really love smart, strong female personalities as a counterweight to the predominance of the strong male lead that still dominates this type of fiction.

Marsalis is one of a new breed...literally. Genetically engineered by the U.S. government to embody the naked aggression and primal survival skills that centuries of civilization have erased from humankind, Thirteens were intended to be the ultimate military fighting force. The project was scuttled, however, when a fearful public branded the supersoldiers dangerous mutants, dooming the Thirteens to forced exile on Earth's distant, desolate Mars colony. But Marsalis found a way to slip back.

Creative premise
Revisado: 10-06-18
Draw a line from where we are socially, politically, scientifically, into the not too distant future and this seems almost too logical that we end up like the premise of this story.
Interesting characters, Story is a bit disjointed but easy to stay with to the end. Worth a listen.

Historia
First published in 1908, and widely regraded as his masterpiece, Penguin Island is Anatole France's most searching and satirical novel. A humorous critique of customs and laws, rituals and rites, its subject is human nature, but its characters are penguins in the mythical land of Penguinia. The story of the strutting penguins and their virtues and vices is not merely a burlesque allegory of French history, it is a satire of the history of mankind. With gentle yet biting irony, France challenges the Spencerian belief in the ultimate perfectibility of man, though his irony reveals his sympathy for man's weaknesses and his need for social institutions.

Life is not fair - morality of the powerful
Revisado: 08-06-18
More relevant today than ever. Might is right. The little guy has no chance. Hypocrisy all around. This is a wonderfully amuzing exposition of the corruption of modern power over our lives. The narrator is perfect - the voice is of a haughty, dreadfully patient aristocratic explaining the facts of life for posterity. The story is of the banal and the evil ways in which the powerful wrest control and the silly responses from those who should resist. Five stars all around.

I was not expecting a bodice ripper romance
Revisado: 02-04-17
What would have made Outlander better?
Less rape scenes More of what otherwise would have been a fun action adventure romp
I'm not a prude but, really... over the top
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nothing by this author but like the narrator
What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Quality performance
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Delete or reduce the obsessive sexual content and it would be a fun adventure But I can't finish it and returned the next installment unread
