I don’t want it to end!

The world created was very real and I miss my cousins!!! I learned so much. My world was filled with sensory experiences And the calm voice of this narrator soothed me despite all the turmoil in and outside the trilogy.

Comparison to corrupt rulers today
Revisado: 03-21-25
Reading a side view of Jesus’ final days enlightened me with a fresh perspective. And parallels with the current state of corruption in the U.S. surprised me.

Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

The time leaps forward and backward were jarring and confusing at times; I couldn’t listen to its entirety in one sitting. But I lived inside the head of this young duchess and found her perceptive observations fascinating.

Historia
Disciple Matthew, a former tax collector, is invited to work with Peter, James, and John in Jerusalem. He dreams of preaching and performing miracles like his fellow apostles, but he finds his dreams postponed because of a request from Yeshua's mother. Well aware of the passing years, Mary asks Matthew to help her record the stories of Yeshua while the eyewitnesses are still alive. Reluctantly, he agrees, though the longer he and Mary work together, the more difficult their task becomes.

Raised awareness of early Christian challenges
Revisado: 03-06-25
Mary, mother of Jesus, has not been part of my Christian education beyond the obvious Gospel stories, so her imaginative novel raised my consciousness. I have read that Matthew did not write the Gospel attributed to him. Therefore I am curious to discover the foundation which inspired Angela Hunt’s argument.

Historia
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

Poignant for US now
Revisado: 02-20-25
Difficult to read due to the unflinching narrative, this novel is a warning to Americans who believed we were sheltered from such suffering due to our Constitution, our way of life. Sadly, we now have our own Ceausescu. Will we meet the demands of this moment and save our democracy for the children and grandchildren of our beloved country?

Revisado: 01-27-25
Delilah and Sampson is a painful story! But T this novel put it all into perspective for the first time and I have read the Bible twice. Thanks so much Angela Hunt, for the Beauty series in which you expanded the stories of Bathsheba, Esther and Delilah.

The Love Stands Out
Revisado: 01-13-25
My life intersected so often with Ann Patchett’s life- who knew? I was participant in an MFA Young Adult program that sent me to a mental health institution for three days recovery. But I was able to finish and to meet Kate DiCamillo. I flew and crashed a glider. I listened to Dutch House read by Tom Hanks; told my friend (who recommended I read this collection) how his read enhanced my read of the hard cover. I was curious how his reading had come about and loved stumbling on an explanation here.
All these identifiers and still, the resonating chapters were on Sookie. The love shared between this pair gave me hope for a future US beyond today’s heartbreaking democratic cancer. I pray for a greater, compassionate, happy ending for US all. Thank you for writing and reading this loving collection.
