Historia
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral...for all the wrong reasons. Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC.

I loved this story, but hated the way it ended. I wanted so much more. I really hate when stories do this to me. This was well written and you could hear the emotion in the story telling.

You have to read it to understand.
Revisado: 12-17-18
I can only imagine what it's like to be the black family living in the white house. The Obamas have to work twice as hard, just to get half the acceptance. Some people will never know what it means to have dark skin. She handled herself with poise and grace. This book was beautifully written and narrated.

Wasn't sure of this book was going to climax
Revisado: 09-12-18
This was a pretty good read. At first, the book starts off about the NFL and his career. It was a slow start. It wasn't until halfway through the book that I got the meat and potatoes. I really appreciate athletes speaking out and discussing issues close to their hearts. More athletes need to do this. They control the narrative, just like Colin Kaepernick. Good stuff.

Historia
More than two decades after Darrell Cannon was tortured into a false confession of murder, he was finally released from prison with hardly an apology. He wasn’t the only one with a story to tell. Award-winning author Natalie Y. Moore reveals the fight for justice and reparations engineered by Chicago’s Black People Against Police Torture movement. More than one hundred African Americans were brutalized by Chicago Police Department Commander Jon Burge’s sadistic, state-sanctioned “interrogation” ring that operated within the department for decades.

Revisado: 09-11-18
This was a good read, I wanted more context. I never knew about the horrid things police officers were doing in Chicago, but it is a sad long truth. I look forward to reading the other short stories in the series. I have 5 of them.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

What a story!!!
Revisado: 09-07-18
I couldn't imagine living in those times!!! You know, I watched this movie and the book is so much better. I don't appreciate the Author using the real Abelene in her book and then having the gaul to not acknowledge or compensate her. Anyhow, the story is phenomenal. I finished is less than a week. I really wished the ending had more of a bang. For a story that is so bold, the ending was very dull.

Historia
Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

An interesting and remarkable tale!!!
Revisado: 08-14-18
This book is one of the most brutally honest memoirs I have ever read. The men, the money, the illness...her story is very candid. At times the story was so vivid, it seemed to be make believe. I believed it because she shared details about her life that a normal person simply would be too ashamed to share. Everyone has a story. Hers is worth listening to.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Revisado: 06-11-18
When I tell you this book made made me happy, angry and sad all at the same time...My God!!! Being a woman of color and coming out the hood and going to the suburbs, I can totally relate. Reading this story angered me because the killing of unarmed black men is so real, it makes you want to cry. The narrator was absolutely wonderful and I will be looking for other books she has narrated.

I like Gabrielle, even though she seems a bit self absorbed. Her story is somewhat relatable. The story jumped around quite a bit, but it was always easy to follow along. Good read.
