Historia
An old man lies dying. Confined to bed in his living room, he sees the walls around him begin to collapse, the windows come loose from their sashes, and the ceiling plaster fall off in great chunks, showering him with a lifetime of debris: newspaper clippings, old photographs, wool jackets, rusty tools, and the mangled brass works of antique clocks. Soon, the clouds from the sky above plummet down on top of him, followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating.

poetic but too complicated
Revisado: 09-28-24
I enjoyed the characters and much of the lofty language, but the plot became difficult to follow when the scenes became ethereal and very distant. I liked the author's focus on time and the use of clocks to portray our passage through this life. I sum, him, it was a very different book with many, many positive elements, but I just did not see how everything came together at the end. I assume it was me and not the author.

Historia
A few years after the Wright brothers’ first flight, Bessie was working the Texas cotton fields with her family when an airplane flew over their heads. It buzzed so low she thought she could catch it in her hands. Bessie was fearless. She knew there was freedom in those wings. The daughter of a woman born into slavery, Bessie answers the call of the Great Migration. She moves to Chicago, where she wins the backing of two wealthy, powerful Black men—Robert Abbott, creator and publisher of the Chicago Defender, and Jesse Binga, the founder of Chicago’s first Black bank.

Inspiring story
Revisado: 09-05-24
Although I did not care for the way the prologue was written or the linear approach to telling this story by Ms Hopson, the story is one of the most inspirational I have listened to in a long, long time. Ms. Coleman was decades ahead of her time. Her courage, perseverance, and belief in herself, was beyond reproach. This story should serve as an inspiration to all women, black and white, and should be told in every classroom across America.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

I listened to this book because of Stephen King's one word recommendation, " Terrifying". Not surprisingly, King described this book perfectly. The blended storylines tie together in a seamless fashion. The characters, the plot, and the action, move together like the body of a 10k runner as it speeds up towards the bell lap.... and the bell lab in this book is unlike any other I have listened to in a long time. The tape at the finish line of this book is snapped in a way that one will never forget. Bravo for Ken Follett.

Constant angst about impending murders
Revisado: 07-11-24
As with most of Mr. Folllett's thrillers, the book becomes very difficult to stop listening to, however, it is balanced by the fear of continuing to listen to. Fantastic story, great characters, lots of tantalizing twists and turns, and a wonderful ending. Highly recommend.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Classic Sci-Fi Adventure
Revisado: 06-26-24
Andy Weir has an incredibly technical mind married to an ability to tell a very engaging tale. His use of language is not going to win any Shakespearean awards, but at the end of the day it is always about the story. His story is fantastic and his ability to tell it is even better.

Meanwhile
Revisado: 06-10-24
I remember reading about how Ms. Wood came up with the title to one of her first books, "When We Were the Kennedys", which is such a wonderful read. I believe that a friend of hers suggested it as a catchy title instead of the one Ms. Wood intended to use. "How to Read a Book" is another great title, which I believe materialized in a somewhat similar fashion. I feel like the title is perfect in that it has so many meanings when applied to the plot and characters in it. The old English idiom "Do not judge a book by its cover" is a wonderful corollary which applies to many of the characters in this book, too. "How to Read a Book" should become a best seller based on its prosaic language, lovable characters, and depth of human emotions so well created and meshed. But, it is the last chapter which truly makes the book worth reading. This is where "Meanwhile" rises, like a phoenix, from "Spoon River Anthology" - a very powerful ending which puts all of our lives in perspective. What better reason could there be to read a book.

Overrated
Revisado: 05-28-24
I have no idea how this book received the International Booker Prize. The protagonists are both weak, unlikeable, and lack credibility. Trying to tie the crumbling of the Berlin Wall in with the deterioration of the relationship between the protagonists does not work. I wanted to like this book, but there was never any traction for me with the plot or the characters.
