I’ve listened to other Devon C Ford books so I know he can write good and tell a story you want to hear or read but this one ain’t his best.

Made it through about 2/3 of the listen and just had to stop.

Predictable, generic, and just plain silly.

Story seemed rushed at points. A lot of things didn’t make sense. And the ending cliff hanger left me not caring about what happens next

Not bad. Not a whole lot of zombie action but a good story and writing.

This is probably the darkest apocalyptic book Ive listened to or read. There are no taboos or walls the author was afraid to break. And because of this and the excellent writing and story telling make this book series my top 10 list.

The author reads a little slow and almost dreary sounding but it’s perfect for this book! It sets the mood for the series and reminds readers how utterly hopeless things are for the characters just trying to survive in world no longer theirs.

No spoilers but this isnt a They all lived happily ever after book. At times I felt my self wanting to hug my daughter and wife…thats how good this book series is.

Like everyone else has already said the narration is just off. It’s not the narrators voice or the fact it’s different than Michael Kraamers, it’s how he delivers the witty lines, moments of sorrow, anger, female voices, and pretty much everything else. I just couldn’t get into the story and I loved the first 3 books. It’s not a ground breaking amazing zombie series but it was fun to listen to and pretty accurate as far as firearms, gas going bad, and other general things that would happen if society and manufacturing got turned off. One minor firearm issue is them having to replace suppressors so often. Unless the author envisioned them using wipes instead of modern baffle construction then a pistol or submachine gun suppressor will last thousands of rounds before it even must be cleaned let alone discarded. I can see burning though rifle suppressors if they are being made from regular old stainless or alloy steel and not the cobalt, inconel, and other super alloys being used nowadays. But unless you’re running full auto mag after mag they’ll last a thousand rnds before melting. Ok gun nerd rant done.

At first the story telling seemed repetitive and it was repetitive because it was meant to be repetitive. As a listener I was able to really get into the head of O’Ryan and try to grasp what goes through a combat leader and fighter’s mind. All that while a compelling scifi battle takes place with more moving pieces than a bag full of cats. Looking forward to book 3.

Needs More Guns Less Political Opinion

The book starts off great by showing how firearms shaped battles and how firearm innovations came about. Then towards the middle it gets politically opinionated. Example: the author states the use of expanding bullets against African tribesman and other “savages” around the world was due to racist views of white imperial nationalist. The view that these savages were more animal than men and needed something stronger. That’s partially true. The part left out is that often times these “savages” would indulge in drugs before a battle that really got them riled up and made them fearless and numb to some pretty horrific wounds. Check out the battles between the U.S. and the Phillipine Moros? I think. The U.S. had to dig out the old 1873 single action colts firing 45 cal. slugs because the issue 38 revolver just wasn’t cutting it when close up fighting occurred and rifles ran dry.

Also, everything that’s wrong with the world is due to Nationalism. You know what? Watch a few old discovery shows on firearms and you’ll be all caught up. Oh and 5.56x45mm and 223 Remington chambered rifles fire a .224” diameter projectile not .223”. .223 refers to groove diameter of the bore. This guy ain’t no expert. How could you not know that? besides the 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm, typically AK rounds, it’s like the second most used military round in the world. What else is wrong in this book?

First 2 books were just ok. The last book took a nose dive. Just got too unbelievable and too ridiculous. I tapped out about 3 hours in to book 3.

While explaining a first date experience at a drive in theatre involving hands and um…. private parts, Shane Moxie states “ I covered the windshield like a house painters radio”. I’m using that line. This book had a lot of great hilarious moments. Laugh out loud moments. I’m going to listen to more of what the author has written. Surprised this book has so few reviews. This isn’t a mystery novel who did it masterpiece and I dont think the author ever meant it to be. So just enjoy the ride and dont pay too much attention to the small details.
