Historia
Remarkably little is known about the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. So little, in fact, that scientists and philosophers have, for centuries, been obsessed with what has become known as the “eel question”: Where do eels come from? What are they? Are they fish or some other kind of creature altogether? Even in our age of advanced science, no one has ever seen eels mating or giving birth, and we still don’t understand what drives them, after living for decades in freshwater, to swim great distances back to the ocean at the end of their lives. They remain a mystery.

Incredibly well done nonfiction that successfully connects natural history and memoir beautifully. Beautifully written in a style that reminded me of Robert Macfarlane with a great narrative performance by Alex Wyndham. Ming the clam 4evur.

In 1784, passengers on the ship Empress of China became the first Americans to land in China and the first to eat Chinese food. Today there are over 40,000 Chinese restaurants across the United States - by far the most plentiful among all our ethnic eateries. Now, in Chop Suey, Andrew Coe provides the authoritative history of the American infatuation with Chinese food, telling its fascinating story for the first time.

Really Great
Revisado: 01-03-21
Excellent history of a very complex and dense subject. I was worried that it would have too much of a twentieth century focus but it turned out to be very thorough in scope.

Historia
The Simulmatics Corporation, founded in 1959, mined data, targeted voters, accelerated news, manipulated consumers, destabilized politics, and disordered knowledge - decades before Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Cambridge Analytica. Silicon Valley likes to imagine that it has no past, but the scientists of Simulmatics are the long-dead grandfathers of Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. Borrowing from psychological warfare, they used computers to predict and direct human behavior, deploying their “People Machine” from New York, Cambridge, and Saigon.

Jill Lepore is one of the best writers on history out there today which makes this bizarre narration a real bummer. She mumbles words, reads too fast and does this completely unlistenable, sock puppet level impressions of seemingly anything and everything in quotes- and these aren't impressions of famous people, these are impressions of long dead anonymous political analysts that no one has ever heard speak, including, I'm assuming, the author. What a weird choice. Was anyone producing this?

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Very good book and half a diary
Revisado: 05-19-20
I listened to the end and I still have no idea what a sociopathic eugenics pioneer has to do with the author's love life. Not only distracting but also undervalued the truly awful and very important history of American eugenics by holding them in comparison.

Historia
Oklahoma City was born from chaos. It was founded in a bizarre but momentous "Land Run" in 1889, when thousands of people lined up along the borders of Oklahoma Territory and rushed in at noon to stake their claims. Since then, it has been a city torn between the wild energy that drives its outsize ambitions and the forces of order that seek sustainable progress.

Fascinating History
Revisado: 04-28-19
I am not a basketball fan but I do sometimes like sports writing (A sense of Where You are, etc.) and I thought that the author did do a great job of tying these two narratives together. That being said, I found the parts about OK history and civil rights and meteorology much more engaging.

Historia
On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was good-bye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more.

One of my favorite nonfiction books ever written. Susan Orlean effortlessly weaves between an engaging story of arson, a series of portraits of the library workers at the present day Los Angeles library, the roots of the American Library Association and her relationship to the library and the author's mother. Beautifully executed work.

Historia
In Behold, America, Sarah Churchwell offers a surprising account of 20th-century Americans' fierce battle for the nation's soul. It follows the stories of two phrases - the "American dream" and "America First" - that once embodied opposing visions for America. Starting as a Republican motto before becoming a hugely influential isolationist slogan during World War I, America First was always closely linked with authoritarianism and white supremacy. The American dream, meanwhile, initially represented a broad vision of democratic and economic equality.

Required Reading
Revisado: 04-28-19
By far the best book that I have read in a year of great books. Sarah Churchwell has essentially written about the history of the racist dog-whistle politics in America which is an amazing accomplishment. The book also manages to directly tie events from the rise of fascism to the present day and our current president in a way that will still be relevant for years to come. Excellent subtle but engaging vocal performance by Anne Twomey. This book should be taught in American schools.

Excellent companion piece to Caro's Power Broker with wonderful insights into his research, interview and writing process. Also, some really motivating portions of the book devoted to making important work vs. everyday realities (being broke). I also liked his vocal performance quite a bit.
