Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Shows what a tragedy the show was
Revisado: 11-12-23
This story has depth and layers to the characters that tells the story of America, and all “conquered” lands, through the story of Texas — and I read it because I’d recently watched the canceled TV show, which held none of its pace and melancholy. If you liked the show, you’ll love this and mourn what a masterpiece the show could have been. Excellent narration for each narrator, performed wonderfully and capturing multiple voices without the singsong mockery that audiobooks often have.

Historia
There’s no formal training for battlefield salvage. You just have to pick things up as you go along. Swords, armour, arrows–and the bodies, of course. Over the years, Saevus Corax has picked up a lot of things. Some of them have made him decent money, others have brought nothing but trouble. But it’s a living, and somebody has to deal with the dead. Something else that Saevus has buried is his past. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite succeed.

Typical KJ Parker, in a good way
Revisado: 10-27-23
Complicated protagonist, the witty kind of dialogue everyone wishes they could snap out in person, and a sprawling story in a fictional world. If you’re new to his work, I wouldn’t start here — probably enjoyed it because of the familiarity more than the story itself, which is obviously set up for sequels, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Maybe pick up the Engineer series or the latest trilogy.

Historia
The magnificent sequel to A Crowning Mercy, Fallen Angels reunites New York Times bestseller Bernard Cornwell—whom the Washington Post calls, “perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today”—with co-author Susannah Kells for a breathtaking story brimming with excitement, intrigue, danger, and passion.

Predictable, boring sequel
Revisado: 04-24-22
It was just a pretty weak romance story, a poor followup to the predecessor. Every twist/turn was entirely predictable, and the plot was just an insipid vehicle to carry the unsurprising love story.

Historia
When Harold Godwinson is crowned king of England in 1066, William of Normandy contests his right to be king because of an oath Harold had earlier sworn to support William's own acquisition of the throne. Henty's treatment of this critical time in history of the English people is even-handed, and his portrayal of Harold Godwinson - a king much neglected in our day - is a sympathetic one. Wulf of Steyning, a young Saxon thane in the service of Earl Harold, accompanies him on his fateful trip to Normandy.

Unable to move past the reader’s performance
Revisado: 04-16-22
It’s a so-so story, but four chapters in and I absolutely cannot bare to listen to this goober reading as if it’s a children’s book. Terrible voice impressions, weak acting, unconvincing emotion, and generally sounding like a disinterested kindergarten teacher.
