Historia
Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings. In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours. The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself.

Listened Twice
Revisado: 03-02-20
Great reading—it was my second listen. Written to give several different perspectives. And at the end, it even reviews what several other authors & contemporaries thought of Franklin.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Wonderful Story, Wonderful Reading
Revisado: 01-01-15
I thoroughly enjoyed this book on many levels. It was read by Edward Herman, who passed just as I was finishing the book. He is one of my favorite readers. The story was touching, & well done. Can't recommend it more highly.

Historia
Listen as Frank tells in his own inimitable voice his story of how at the age of 19 he traveled from Limerick to New York in pursuit of the American dream. Despite the abundance of unsolicited advice he gets to "join the cops" and "stick to his own kind", Frank knows that he should educate himself and somehow rise above his circumstances.

Absolute Great Read
Revisado: 04-18-10
I loved this book. Read it on the flight over to Ireland. Frank McCourt reads beautifully--a feat not easily done by most authors. I was a little concerned that "'Tis" would be redundant, after having read Angela's Ashes--however this book was all new and refreshing.

Of all the crowned heads of Europe, there was none to match the dignity, grace, and magnificence of Louis XIV, the greatest king in French history. And there was no other palace to match the glory of Versailles at its zenith.

Good Overview of the Reign of King Louis the 14th
Revisado: 04-18-10
Listened to this on a long drive across country, in preparation for an upcoming trip to Paris. The author, Nancy Mitford, gives a thorough description of the life of the Sun King. I love the little details of political connections and back stories of people in the King's life, from vignettes of the Gardener, to quarrels between his economic and military chiefs of staff. However, I did not give this 4 stars because there were just too many names to keep track of. I would love to have had a chart of names and portraits to look at while reading this book.
Finally, I would like to compliment Ms Mitford on sussing out the origins and influences of power, economic and political, as well as aesthetic and religious as they were used in the 17th Century.
