Rich worldbuilding & miraculous magic
Revisado: 05-20-24
This book was a wonderful listen as always thanks to Fortgang. The writing was visual and rich, and I will always love Bardugo’s themes of magic and heresy. I found Lucia’s character relatable, flawed, and ambitious. Some parts at the end could have been expanded on, but a great read.

A great start to a new era
Revisado: 01-17-24
Without revealing any spoilers, Abercrombie really commits to the ‘new era’ atmosphere of the new trilogy. Fans of the previous books can expect a lot of callbacks (and consequences) of the first trilogy & three standalones, but Abercrombie makes a strong statement many times: this series is about the next gen.

Historia
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

you have to be realistic about these things
Revisado: 12-01-23
Look— is it my favorite Abercombie book? No. Does it have fan favorite characters, or iconic settings from the original trilogy? No. But ‘The Heroes’ delivers the same high-quality storytelling I’ve come to expect from Abercrombie’s work. For readers invested in the overarching political intrigue of the First Law universe, this book is layered with a shocking amount of greater implications. I loved the references to ‘Best Served Cold’ (hello ruby ring) and seeing the consequences of the First Law Trilogy firsthand re: the military. Above all, ‘The Heroes’ drums home one message: war is inefficient, frustrating, unfair, and mostly rewards the least-deserving. Maybe that’s why people don’t love it.
This is my least favorite book in the First Law canon, so I was tempted to give it 4 stars instead of 5. Why? Because it’s only slightly less entertaining than its fantastic neighbors? If this had been a standalone book from an unknown author, I would’ve given it 5 stars. So here you go.

Another amazing performance
Revisado: 06-20-23
I say the same thing in every review, but Paraneau is a legend for the sheer volume of character voices performed. Especially in this book (which features a lot of goblins talking to other goblins, drakes to drakes, etc) I’m impressed by her ability to keep everyone distinct.
Some complaints about this book are valid. If you don’t like the goblin subplot or hope for more classic adventuring, this one probably won’t be your favorite. But I think it’s high time Erin’s long-standing dedication to goblin freedom bore some fruit!!! Anyone claiming events in this book won’t have series-long repercussions isn’t paying attention.

Fantastic ending for a great series
Revisado: 04-18-23
Wonderful, wonderful series. It’s rare that the end of a book makes me cry just from happiness for the characters (hearing some of those familiar voices in the epilogue really got me too). An exciting, heartfelt story. Thank you to all involved.
I also appreciated the surprise interview between Maggie and Will after the end. I hope they work together again someday.

Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality. Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the more inextricably she becomes tied to it. Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother was a dreamer...and a killer. She has seen what dreaming can do to a person. And she has seen the damage that dreamers can do. But that is nothing compared to the destruction that is about to be unleashed....

An author & narrator match made in heaven
Revisado: 04-11-23
As a long-time fan of both Stiefvater and Patton, it fills me with immense joy to hear the Dreamer trilogy from this duo. Will Patton felt essential to the original Raven Cycle audiobooks, and continues to KILL IT in this new series.
As for the book’s content, I love how boldly Steifvater dove into a new story relatively detached from TRC’s plot. This isn’t a Gansey&Co Henrietta adventure; it feels wider, and wilder, and more grown up. A lot like Ronan.
Unexpected favorite character of this book is Declan. It’s a difficult task to make a dedicatedly boring character into a man nonetheless entertaining to watch. When those moments of personality hit— WHAM.

It's raining in Liscor. The spring rains have come and Liscor's entire geography changes with the dawning of the new year. The Floodplains of Liscor live up to their name, and the only way anyone is going to travel is by boat. With the rains come more monsters, dungeon delving, more goblins...not to mention some unwanted attention for the Wandering Inn.

Revisado: 07-27-22
As with every installation before this, Andrea Parsneau blows me away with her range. I love this series and the world it populates, but Andrea brings a sparkle factor that I look forward to with every new release. I’m at the point where I’d rather wait for the next audiobook than read ahead on my own.
Thank you for your hard work and consistency!! I have no clue how you keep all those voices straight in your head but — as always — can’t wait to hear you again. :D

Stunning from start to finish. As someone already very familiar with the case I wondered if the book would add anything for me— it did. Case-wise and emotionally. An incredible work both on McNamara’s part and the efforts of those who sought to complete her work.

Historia
"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

Slow and rewarding
Revisado: 04-21-21
I truly think a lot of the negative reviews come from people who want protagonists to be perfect, badass self-insert characters who don’t feel things like trauma or growth. Erin and Ryoka aren’t perfect people, nor are they my favorite characters. But they are engaging perspectives on a sprawling, massively interesting world.
As far as litRPG goes, this story actually focuses more on relationships than power-building. I love the enormous cast of side characters and how different their perspectives on the world are. MAJOR props to the narrator Andrea Parsneau for handling dozens of characters and giving each a truly unique voice. She was given a very tall order, and killed it IMO.
Maybe this story isn’t for everyone. The writing does begin quite rusty, and gets better over time, as with all writers improving their craft. But the love, loss, and discovery between characters was a special treat for me, and I hope others will give it a shot.
