Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Amazing life, a brilliant though imperfect man

if the Nolan film caught your interest this excellent bio will reward it handsomely. The story of Oppie's maturation and the Manhattan Project are well told, but the account of his postwar ordeal gives a powerful sense the red scare at the height of the Cold War and what it was like to be in the FBI's crosshairs at that time. I can think of some quibbles as a historian but none detract from the authors' monumental achievement.

I had a lot of trouble finding a French podcast that was not too advanced nor too elementary -- just right (aspiring intermediate)! Gaelle speaks clearly and at the perfect pace, with an uncanny sense of when she needs to break in with a clarifying word or two in English. Also her topics are interesting and well thought-out; I really enjoyed her latest series on French cities outside of Paris. (Strasbourg, peut-etre?) Congratulations, Gaelle, and keep it going!

Michael Page's reading is absolutely terrific! His versatility in taking on different voices for the characters is remarkable. His formal, knightly Don Q in particular is just perfect, capturing the endearing absurdity of the Knight of the Sad Countenance
