Historia
When Rozakajin, road-weary bandit and army deserter, spots a hapless blond young man in a country inn with an intriguing treasure map, he thinks he’s scouted an easy and lucrative victim. Attaching himself to odd traveler Penric seems simple enough, but when Roz’s old enemies catch up from behind, his plans take a turn for the much worse. When Pen’s claim that I never travel alone proves true in ways Roz never imagined, his world becomes more frightening still—but also much wider than he’d ever dared to dream.

this book committed the cardinal sin of boring me
Revisado: 08-02-24
I've read all of the Pen & Des books multiple times. I consider myself a huge fan of almost everything LMB has written . But I gotta say this one was a disappointment. It's BORING. Nothing unexpected happens, you know how the whole thing will go from the very beginning. And it's missing the usual depth that you get from LMB's characters, they feel flat and basic and obvious. Des doesn't even get to be particularly witty or sarcastic! I feel like she wrote this novella on autopilot.

mixed feelings
Revisado: 02-12-22
good storytelling, but terrible message. also needs a huge content warning for sexual violence. speaking of which, does no one in the future have decent therapists? this book is NOT a guide on how you treat someone recovering from trauma. also, I'm not even going to touch on the extreme lack of science in this sci-fi - sometimes that's fine, I don't demand perfect realism in my aliens, but wow the lack of science actually broke me out of the story sometimes. written in the 90s, so I suppose I can only complain so much about the patriarchal gender roles, but my eyes got tired of rolling after awhile.
all of those complaints aside, the writing style follows good storytelling rules and keeps the reader engaged. I always enjoy writers who stich together a story through jumping timelines. I just haaaaaaaaaated the final message of the story.

Historia
A century ago, scientists theorised that a habitable planet existed in a nearby solar system. Today, 10 astronauts will leave a dying Earth to find it. Four are decorated veterans of the 20th century’s space race. And six are teenagers, graduates of the exclusive Dalton Academy, who’ve been in training for this mission for most of their lives. It will take the team 23 years to reach Terra-Two. Twenty-three years spent in close quarters. Twenty-three years with no-one to rely on but each other. Twenty-three years with no rescue possible, should something go wrong.

awkward pacing, poor characters, illogical choices
Revisado: 01-15-20
I don't demand realism from my sci fi, but I want the characters to make logical choices according to who they are, and I feel like that's lacking in this book.
The pacing is awkward, too slow to be truly engaging.

Historia
The lines. No ship can traverse the void without them. Only linesmen can work with them. But only Ean Lambert hears their song. And everyone thinks he's crazy.... Most slum kids never go far, certainly not becoming a level 10 linesman like Ean. Even if he's part of a small and unethical cartel, and the other linesmen disdain his self-taught methods, he's certified and working. Then a mysterious alien ship is discovered at the edges of the galaxy.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

I'm not usually a post apocalyptic fan...
Revisado: 10-23-18
I'm not usually a post apocalyptic fan but this was well done. It focuses deeply on the characters and their motivations and what makes them and changes them. There isn't too much more or violence or suspense, but it still keeps you very invested in the characters. It does a bit of time jumping back and forth, but it's not hard to follow, you always know when and where you are in the greater plot.
