This book feels like a young adult intro novel to 40k; bits and pieces of the grimdark we love are there, but it is altogether bland and forgetful. Nothing wrong with a little bolter porn, but this turned into a drag for me.

The orks have no real flavor, and hardly feel threatening except for the big bosses - albeit rightfully so - towards the end.

The space marines are very boiler plate.

This novel dragged on for me, and felt very anticlimactic.

The narrator was hit or miss, some voices were stellar, others felt very forced and cheesy (perhaps half the reason I found the space marines flat in this story).

Overall, it is a generic space marine story. I was hoping for a random chaos or tyranid incursion at the halfway mark to make it interesting.

The book covers a lot of society issues facing boys, mostly centered around contemporary issues when it was written. The content is solid enough albeit dated.

It's clear society picked a different path, and all of what Dr. Dobson (and many other sane, normal people) warned against has now worsened tenfold.

As a primer for being made aware of how certain festering societal issues have effected our youth, this book is not a bad place to start. However, it does show its age. The answers to today's compounding problems with raising kids in their formative years and keeping them away from how repugnant mainstream society has become require a much stronger approach and action than what this book prescribes.

For starting this off with a quote about how someone can't wait to leave the 20th century behind, the author finds every way to agree with the premises of the outcome of the 20th century. And in typical conservative fashion, tries to plead his case using the framework of those who hate and oppose him.

Overall not a thrilling read, especially in the first half of the book. An accurate depiction of the Open Society's aims, but fails to prescribe any meaningful way to resist it or alter the trajectory of our careening, sinking ship that is the civilizational West.

I tried to like this, but couldn't get over the marvel-tier quips the insufferable main character had to throw in there every time something happened. It really kept breaking the suspension of disbelief / immersion of the story for me.

The narration was superb however, and it was the only thing that really kept me wanting to keep listening. But overall, too reddit for me.

The author could not shoe in his contemporary in vogue neoliberal politics into this concise history lesson any harder I think if he tried. For a skimming over of how the nation of Hungary came to be, this serves its purpose.

I didn't pay to hear you make jabs at Viktor Orban's policies of daring to have *some* pushback against the EU's historically insane policies of racial flagellation -- which, seeing as how that wider experiment has gone and continues to devolve in 2023 -- has been the RIGHT decision for the Hungarian people.

I could hardly stop listening once this started.

Action packed. Full of hope and loss, triumph and tragedy. You will root for villains and heroes alike. Grimdark and magnificent.

40k isn't written like this, anymore.

Thought about giving up on this one about halfway through as it takes forever for any real movement of the plot to begin. Lots of internal dialog to the point it starts feeling like you're listening to anime or something.

However, the narration is superb and the story picks up late and ends spectacularly. Overall, pleasantly surprised. Not all that into Necrons to begin with so I went into this with zero expectations.

GW we need more Night Lords content like this. ADB proving himself a master writer of the 40k universe, once again.

I'm not sure whether or not it was due to trying to listen to this while I was working, but I found it incredibly difficult to keep up with where the character was or what was going at most points of the plot. The only scene which I felt I was truly able to keep up was when Grayson was being hunted, and even then I'm not even sure how he ended up there.

There were issues with pacing with the author's prose that irritated me. Using the aforementioned scene again, there were multiple points during the character being hunted by multiple people, dogs, and even a helicopter, where the prose breaks from the action to give the characters deep, well thought out plan of action. I don't think in such a situation anyone would be thinking things out in such detail, or thinking much of anything other than RUN.

The author also goes on these odd, extremely high detailed tangents to describe how some object shimmered. I wish the effort was spent on fleshing out the environment moreso than simply seeming to flex his ability to write vivid, poetic depictions of random, inconsequential things.

The main character starts preaching at the audience well before any kind of grounds are laid for the audience to get invested in him. I like and agree with his philosophical insights, it just felt a little ham fisted at times.

All those criticisms aside, it was a very somber, yet grounded story that didn't force the audience to suspend their disbelief all too much as it tends to stay within the expectations of a grim, all-too-near future.
