Tony Horwitz was at his best when he blended history and journalism to tell us of our country’s past and present. He excels at in his final journey: “Spying on the South,” which was published just weeks before his death. The book is a mix of history lesson and travelogue as Horwitz follows in the path of landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted’s journeys through antebellum south. Each chapter includes part of Olmsted’s trip followed by Horwitz’ 21st-century journalism. There are plenty of interesting characters he meets across the south, particularly in Texas, which accounts for the second half of the book.

I am sad this is Horwitz’ final journey but think it was a fitting finale for the talented author. I thought the narrator did a great job of capturing Horwitz' personality during the first-person travelogue accounts.

Elijah Wood nails the variety of dialects. It takes the hard work out of trying to interpret the phrases and lets you focus instead on the characters, and truly appreciate this incredible and entertaining story by Mark Twain.

Great narration, even better storytelling. It will bring you back to the turbulent ALCS matchups of 2003 and 2004 -- and take you even further back to 1978, 1948, and 1904. By the end you really feel you understand what makes the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry so special.

This is a good, fun read. Don't expect it to be on the same level as Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five and you will still enjoy it a lot. Also, there's images throughout the book that the reader misses out on; Malcovich does a good job of describing them and keeping it going. In fact, if it was anyone other than him I'd probably recommend skipping the audiobook and sticking with physical copy but he does such an awesome job. An enjoyable 6.5 hours.
