Historia
Observing an encounter between Catholic and Buddhist monks in 1996 at the Abbey of Gethsemani, near where he grew up in rural Kentucky, Fenton Johnson found himself unable to make the sign of the cross. His distance from his childhood faith had become so great - he considered himself a rational, skeptical man - that he could not participate in this most basic ritual. Impelled by this troubling experience, Johnson began a search for the meaning of the spiritual life.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Honestly, I didn't love the narration. The book could have used more vigorous editing and rearrangement. That being said, the essential narrative is luminous.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Keeping Faith?
There is an epiphany of the role of ritual and the physical in the growth of the emotional and spiritual.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The female voice (narrator) for a character who is so importantly finding his identity as it does or does not relate to his sexually is frequently confusing.
Do you think Keeping Faith needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No

Good Principles, Grating Narration
Revisado: 09-09-15
What would have made No Sweat better?
Chiefly, a narrator with a inclination to stay in a lower pitch range.
Would you recommend No Sweat to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend a book/hardcopy. This production is a little hard to listen through.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
There was an almost teen-aged sing song quality to her pitch and pace which brought me out of the material an grated on my ears. There are plenty of female voices that actually do a generally better job of holding our human attentions.
Any additional comments?
The one thing that I "take away" for this one is that every bit of movement counts, instead of requiring that I need to achieve a threshold "workout" level. I think that this is valuable.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This a cool book for members and sympathizers of the nerd community. It is funny, which lots of scifi, pop-culture references. It also a very genuine tome, trying to help those who listen be better and happier. Be prepared for ahem,..some,.. profanity.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Nerdist Way?
I was most intrigued by Chris' recommendation to put together a patchwork career, as one might diversify a stock portfolio. If one fails, there will still be a couple more in the wings. It also struck me that he automatically updates Quicken (or whatever) everyday, using only a few minutes to check any missing categories. I am already pretty automated, but that is taking it to another level.
Which character – as performed by Chris Hardwick – was your favorite?
(tie) Dr. Emmet Brown and Chris Hardwick
Any additional comments?
I kind of skipped most of the workout descriptions. They come across dry in audio. Also, I already have a fundamental knowledge and routine in that area. He might have done better to recommend somebody else's work (a trainer) to view / listen to.
I always think it can be dicey to have an audio read by the author. In this case it came out with more positives than negatives. Chris could have cut down on a few profanitys, not all, but some were just plain unnecessarily weird. That is more a criticism of the text than the performance.
In audio form, some parts of the performance where oddly over the top, overly jocular, all loud, no soft. A pro reader probably would have introduced more vocal light and shade, making some parts a little less harsh to the ear. The performance left me wondering how trainer Tom actually sounds. That said, Chris' enthusiasm really shines through. It is his story, and really could be told by no one else.
