Nearly everyone is familiar with holograms - three-dimensional images projected into space with the aid of a laser. Two of the world's most eminent thinkers believe that the universe itself may be a giant hologram, quite literally a kind of image or construct created, at least in part, by the human mind. University of London physicist David Bohm, one of the world's most respected quantum physicists, and Stanford neurophysiologist Karl Pribram, an architect of our modern understanding of the brain, have developed a remarkable new way of looking at the universe.

Pseudoscience swill
Revisado: 01-02-25
The book is just stories about poltergeists, psychics, reincarnation, the power of prayer or positive thinking and auras. All just anecdotes, very little actual hard science and very little about how the universe is actually “holographic.” Don’t waste your money. The author also claims to have psychic abilities. It’s good to have an open mind to such possibilities but I think this author has gone too far down the rabbit hole. Show me the peer reviewed, double blind science that has been independently verified. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Let’s see that evidence.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Improbable but not impossible sequence of events
Revisado: 04-25-24
The hypothetical story in this book is improbable - likely to make all the points the author wants to make and to have a story that ends in a full scale nuclear war - but, I’m sad to say, not at all impossible. We really are on a knife’s edge and we need to get off it before we destroy ourselves. It’s utterly stupid and to think of the trillions of dollars we spent to put ourselves in this ridiculous position. What kind of world would we have if we weren’t so stupid?

Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

Politics, but what do you expect?
Revisado: 03-10-23
There are a ton of negative reviews on here saying the book is too political. This story is mostly about people in a difficult situation so, of course their world view will deeply influence their actions. This can't and shouldn't be ignored. The book is political because the story requires it. Other post-apocalyptic stories dance around it and show their political views as character stereotypes rather than being overt and I think it makes the story a little less authentic when they do. In this case, the author is being honest and he is getting lambasted for it.
That said, I was a bit surprised by the ageism of the characters though. I think he did take it a little too far there. However, I did not give the book four stars because of that, I gave it four stars because the story was just not that great- at least not up to his other books. The Bobiverse books (the first three anyway) were awesome and The Singularity Trap was also excellent. He gets four starts because the story was a bit forced and clichéd at times. Still well worth it though. I love the concept and the characters.

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

The best book of the Expeditionary Force series so far
Revisado: 12-12-21
This is arguably the best book of the series so far but the author still walks too close to the line between “good science fiction that doesn’t take itself too seriously” and childish teen fiction. The author really needs to ditch the cliches too - especially when aliens are speaking. That said, I still love the series and look forward to the next book.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Though I wouldn't call it his best work, its still excellent. Smart, solid science fiction. Ray Porter is an excellent narrator but not my favorite so he gets four stars...

Low rent version of "Expeditionary Force"
Revisado: 06-15-21
Snarky alien AI that is helping humans repel an alien invasion? Gee, where have I heard that before? To be fair, it is reasonably well written but is way to dirivative to be enjoyable - especially because it is read by the same narrator as "Expeditionary Force." R.C. Bray does a great job (as usual) but I hear Skippy when Charles speaks. I get it, "Expeditionary Force" was a huge success so there will be knockoffs but maybe put some space between listening to this series and "Expeditionary Force."

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Another great story!
Revisado: 07-17-19
This author will never win any awards for the quality of his writing. He uses a lot of clichés - not only that, he uses the same clichés in all of his books, but damn are his stories good. They are well thought out, interesting and all involve the end of the world (bonus) - I will buy anything this guy puts out. His Bobiverse series are my favorite books of all time. If you like *true* science fiction (based in reality not the BS fantasy stuff that tries to pass as sci-fi), this author is your guy.

Becoming more childish with each title
Revisado: 06-19-19
Columbus Day was good. The Skippy character is immature but if you can overlook that. the books are well written and had good story lines. And OK, skippy was fun at first. Unfortunately, the stories have become more and more formulaic and filled with reused plots scenarios and the same handful of cliche's. This audio play is just way over the top. The cheesy sound effects, constant background music and low production quality are nauseating. Yeah, I get that the story is being told by Skippy so cheesiness is "in character" but it's still really annoying. It cheapens the story and places the entire series solidly onto the "teen" genre - just needs a few fart jokes thrown in. I'm not sure if I will be buying anymore of these books... It's too bad because I really liked the earlier books.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Think "Farscape" not "Star Trek"
Revisado: 05-07-17
What made the experience of listening to Columbus Day the most enjoyable?
Great story of a young soldier from rural Maine that who's life is changed radically when aliens show up in his little home town. The story becomes a little ridiculous when he meets an super-intelligent alien AI but its well written and fun so it's easily forgiven. However, by book two, it starts to get a little redundant. Regardless, I am very much looking forward to book 3 and beyond.
What other book might you compare Columbus Day to and why?
I would compare it to the TV show "Farscape" the sometimes ridiculous and some times funny sci-fi show. It even includes wormholes...
Which character – as performed by R.C. Bray – was your favorite?
Sippy is my favorite character... He's an "a**hole". lol

Avoided this book for a long time... Big mistake!
Revisado: 02-07-17
What made the experience of listening to We Are Legion (We Are Bob) the most enjoyable?
So I avoided this book for a long time. Something about the title or cover really annoyed me and made me think it was going to.... Over the top? Pretentious? But this book kept coming up in my "if you liked x, you'll love We Are Legion" so I gave it a go. I like science fiction that is clearly rooted in fact and does not take too many liberties with the science. This book hits the nail on the head. It's serious science fiction but it also does not take itself too seriously - a perfect balance... CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK TWO!
What did you like best about this story?
I'm signed up to have my head frozen (cryonics) when I die and have wondered what the world will be like and what my future will be like when/if I am revived. This book provides one possible outcome (don't worry, no spoilers here) so I found that fascinating - the outcome is, as the story says, "is every nerd's fantasy!"
Which scene was your favorite?
Lots of fun in this book. I don't think I have a favorite scene.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
