Historia
Esther, a painter living in Jamaica and recovering from the death of her husband, comes across a man on a mountain road with no memory of his past. As a hurricane rushes towards the island, she shelters the handsome stranger, names him “Monty”, and tries to uncover the mystery of his missing memory. She soon finds herself falling in love with a man she barely knows, and who doesn’t even know himself. The Mountain and the Sea is a romantic tale about letting go of the past and embracing the present.

"Family Novel" is a misnomer
Revisado: 09-10-19
I bought this hoping to buy this book for a good read and to be able to recommend it to family or read it with my kids. No-go. This book, while advertised as a "Family Story" is about family but not a book I would read with my family. The depiction of rape, 3-somes, f-bombs and other content is less than attractive and not something I would want my family reading. What ever happened to the days of being able to read a good book with a good plot and story line without all the smut and vulgarity? A good plot will hold it's own without the need to add the other crap. Just like a good movie or good comedy. If it is good it will hold it's own without the sex, profanity, vulgarity and crudity so common in today's media. Great story line, weak execution.

Historia
In this adventurous, original book, NPR correspondent Frank Langfitt describes how he created a free taxi service - offering rides in exchange for illuminating conversation - to go beyond the headlines and get to know a wide range of colorful, compelling characters representative of the new China. They include folks like "Beer", a slippery salesman who tries to sell Langfitt a used car; Rocky, a farm boy turned Shanghai lawyer; and Chen, who runs an underground Christian church and moves his family to America in search of a better, freer life.

Too political
Revisado: 06-26-19
I saw an interview with the author the other day and was intrigued. I bought the book. Immediately he started referring to "Trump's" America and the difficulties it created for his Chinese acquaintances. I want to enjoy the stories without all the political interjections and jabs, Democrat or Republican. Just tell the stories. I guess it is protocol for an NPR reporter though.

Historia
Madeleine Verchère's story is based on a true account of colonial French Canada of the 1690s. Harassed by Iroquois, the Verchère family's fort must keep a continual guard. 14-year-old Madeleine is left alone with two younger brothers and few others when the Indians attack. We follow the brave and determined stratagems of Madeleine and her small circle. Madeleine's youthful leadership, especially of her brothers, will win the reader's admiration.

Interesting story but lackluster narration.
Revisado: 06-26-19
The narrator was well spoken however, she lacked the excitement and enthusiasm needed to help the reader/listener become engaged in the story. I wanted to feel what the characters felt in their moments of fear and the anxiety they felt being ever surrounded by the Mohawk seeking a way into their fort. The narrator had inflection and diction but no substance.
