Historia
With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Well done memoir by this actor I have respected since his early movie days- and a surprising thread that includes a fascinating tale of heroism and history- well spoken and weaved nicely-

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

favorite book of 2020, so far
Revisado: 05-24-20
I wasn't sure what to expect- enjoy his show but rarely watch as I stream only- he is super smart and funny and I found the telling of his early life brave, realistic and funny despite what most of us (that were raised comfortable and white in the US) would consider shocking. And I learned so much I didn't know about South Africa, apartheid both during and after the era. Because of his resilient, smart, and loving mother their family lived through life's difficulties and came out the other side. From his unusual relationship with his biological father to his abusive stepfather, to how he made a relative financial killing as a young man through music...he does a great job both educating and giving pleasure to the listener along with him on the ride of his young life- I laughed out loud many times during this book- have given it as a gift to many...highly recommend!

Historia
In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

definitely worth the credit- enjoyed the book. The author created believable male characters rather than making them a women's version of men, as so many romances do- good storyline about the female character's resolvable emotional issues

pretty good telling of horrible crime
Revisado: 08-03-19
I live where this occurred so I followed it in the paper- this guy is a narcissist who didn't have a right to be a husband and especially not a father. As usual, however, people tell you who they are...it is our job to listen- the signs were there- wish she had taken the kids and run...the author told a pretty good tale- did frustrate me by failing easy research on some things like simple pronunciations of common legal terms- still, worth a credit for the listen.

not my style, for 2 reasons
Revisado: 07-10-19
I enjoy True Crime nonfictions- I mostly enjoy how they get caught- the forensics, the work and luck that go into finding them and getting them to trial and the final justice- this book, other than the very beginning, provides neither. They start backwards from catching him and then we find out he is treated like a king, while incarcerated, in order to get information from him the investigators and prosecutors letting him call all the shots as he vividly describes the horrors of the murders- all the hour-by-hour terror the victims went through- then they go back to being enthralled by him as gives away more and more to the prosecutors- in the end, his demise is not justice but getting his own way..our system of doting on serial killers in order to find bodies and get local glory for the DA's is wrong-

always insightful, but...
Revisado: 06-06-19
I've done a lot of reading about Spirit and I loved Kim's first book The Happy Medium- this one was a bit too educational for me, with very few medium stories or experiences, which I enjoy. While I don't mind her Brooklyn accent, she spoke so slowly and loudly in this one, like she was speaking to a first grader that I'm afraid to say I found it annoying. But I did come away with insights, especially from the last chapter-

Historia
Modern medicine is a world that glimmers with new technology and cutting-edge research. To the public eye, medical stories often begin with sirens and flashing lights and culminate in survival or death. But these are only the most visible narratives. As a critical care doctor treating people at their sickest, Daniela Lamas is fascinated by a different story: what comes after for those whose lives are extended by days, months, or years as a result of our treatments and technologies?

a little dry, clinical for my taste
Revisado: 05-30-19
The byline is a bit overstated- not much about death or the "in between"- more about hospital patient cases reflected on by this clinician- maybe it's because as a health care professional, I knew quite a bit about how philosophies are changing in regard to hospital clinicians approaches to what is considered a positive outcome, but I just found her approach dry and clinical- no real insights for me...
