What a great history lesson! I selected it because of Humphrey Bower as the reader! The book was surprisingly enjoyable! Very well researched! Excellent perspectives on the leaders, the troops, and the families at home.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Disturbing
Revisado: 03-09-20
Raised in a very traditional, if not rigid - self aggrandizing Christian family, this book is openly revolutionary! My eldest aunt was revered as a missionary to the darkest of India, Pakistan and Africa. While her stories exhilarated the narrative of childhood- I’ve recently been convicted of the arrogance of a white Savior- of believing there is only one straight and narrow path to tomorrow. This book demands a deep evaluation of one’s beliefs. At its best— disturbingly brilliant! Thank you!

Dark side story
Revisado: 11-12-19
A very challenging topic to address. The main character has deeply disturbing actions and without the last half of the book - reflections of the girl he “collected” I don’t believe I would have completed the book. Haunting and unsettling!

Dust Tracks on a Road is the bold, poignant, and funny autobiography of novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, one of American literature's most compelling and influential authors. Hurston's powerful novels of the South - including Jonah's Gourd Vine and, most famously, Their Eyes Were Watching God - continue to enthrall readers with their lyrical grace, sharp detail, and captivating emotionality.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
This is Bryce Courtenay's moving tribute to his son, Damon, a hemophiliac who died from medically acquired AIDS on April 1, 1991, at the age of 24. April Fool's Day is controversial, painful and heartbreaking, yet has a gentle humor. It is also life-affirming, and, above all, a testimony to the incredible regenerative strength of love: how when we confront our worst, we can become our best. This tragic yet uplifting story will change the way you think.

Mandatory reading for healthcare professionals
Revisado: 06-28-18
A wonderfully touching story of the love and painful loss of a precious young man suffering incredible illnesses associated with hemophilia and AIDS. The contrast between caring doctors and nurses and those who “simply did their job” was stark and profound. The rigidity of the healthcare community at large bears great scrutiny. This indictment is written by me, a nurse who has practiced nearly five decades. We must care with our hearts as much as with our head.

Perfection in delivery
Revisado: 04-09-16
This story delivers a complex weave of characters, spiritual viewpoints, cultural divergences based in a rich tapestry of India and her neighboring countries. Humphrey Bower again provides an astounding array of characters each with his own linguistic style and accent. Without Humphrey's abilities I think the story would have been difficult to follow. He is simply brilliant

A woman's courageous journey
Revisado: 12-03-15
What made the experience of listening to Dust of the Land the most enjoyable?
Chosing to do something other's think is out of character for you is what makes this a great story. One woman's journey into a domain of men, doing what she loves and excelling! Lots of texture.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dust of the Land?
Doing the "right thing" in the bush even if it means losing the prize!
What does Eloise Oxer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The correct accents for the region. I would read everything in my own cultural tongue and have missed the unique words and accents of the region.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the character took time from her goal to care for another human in need. It is what is the best part of us.
Any additional comments?
A great overview of the wonderful outback of Australia in a different time and place.

Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. But through three generations, the families never, for one moment, relinquish their hatred for each other. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.
