Masterful story telling, and the tragic futility of this war.
Revisado: 09-14-24
A huge sweep of history told in such an intimate way. Characters so vulnerable and sadly triumphant, with the emergence of a nation at its core.

Perhaps the best of the series so far…
Revisado: 11-13-22
…or maybe I’m just so enjoying the delightful world created of the detective agency. Such a daunting 32 hours of listening is worth every moment as these characters live with you for six weeks of listening! This book has a plot so relevant to culture today, the contradictions and malevolence of our virtual world laid bare. No one will leave this without an opinion, that’s for sure. A great great read/listen!

Parsons at his finest

A bitter sweet journey of one relationship, told in prose that brings tears to your eyes, and ends giving you just the faintest hope that it might all work out…not just for the characters in the book, but maybe for all of us.

Historia
The history of the nutmeg is one of conquest and exploitation - of both human life and the natural environment - and the origin of our contemporary climate crisis. Tracing the threats to our future to the discovery of the New World and the sea route to the Indian Ocean, The Nutmeg's Curse argues that the dynamics of climate change are rooted in a centuries-old geopolitical order constructed by Western colonialism. The story of the nutmeg becomes a parable revealing the ways human history has always been entangled with earthly materials.

The trilogy that beats them all
Revisado: 07-21-21
So sad to have this trilogy come to an end, or is it? This novel wraps up the story of Art Keller and his own war on drugs, and the tragedy of it all. A perfect book? Not unless you’ve read the first two - then it’s sublime, heart wrenching and beautifully written and narrated. Amazing.

Historia
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

A masterpiece
Revisado: 09-25-20
The beautiful writing of this debut novel wraps tenderly the joyful protoganist, surrounded by so much dreadful sadness and despair. Few books I’ve read have moved me so greatly and challenged me so deeply on how I should be a father and husband. One of those that will live with you long long after you’ve finished it.
