This was a fun listen. Kind of fantasy version of bored one punch man as the main character searches for a class that isn't hero of the world. My only gripe with the writing is that the author really over uses descriptors. MC is "brown haired girl" and Noelle is often "blonde girl" or "noble spellsword". Which wouldn't be a problem except it's used a lot. I wish I had this on Kindle so I could search how many times each descriptor is used. Also, it's just weird when a character is thinking and they refer to themselves as the "the blonde haired girl" as in "the blonde haired girl thought to herself..." Would be much better to just use the character's names.

Narration was excellent and easy to listen to. Will be keeping an eye out for this narrator in the future.

Great Story BAD narration

The story was great. Another fun adventure with Tanner Malone where trouble seems to follow him but he somehow manages to save the day and screw up someone's plans. My biggest problem with this audiobook was the narration. I should have read the other reviews and paid attention. The narrator literally whispers the entire novel. The dialogue bits are normal but the narration bits that are supposed to be neutral are all done in a whispered voice. At first it wasn't that bad, though I kept wondering if it was because the characters were in a tense situation or needed to be stealthy (they weren't). After awhile, this narration style really gets annoying. I almost couldn't focus on listening to the story.

Amazing Plot, Lackluster Execution

This is a love story centered around an incredible plot of a man involuntarily jumping around time that is mostly centered around strong influences in his life. So it's not completely random but he also can't control when or where he goes. I love the plot and at times the story is very engaging. My biggest gripe is the story spends 90% of the time in the head of either Henry or his future wife Claire. The story is basically told to us through these two lenses and it's all tell with very little show. There are scenes that are amazing and you fell immersed in the story but most of the time it feels kind of detached like you're sitting around a fire and being told the story.

There are a few explicit scenes but they're not long and few in number. If you're looking for a romance with a happy ending, this is not it. I think the ending is beautiful and fitting for the story. Both narrators do an an incredible job and I never had any trouble telling the characters apart. The story does jump around but I never found it hard to follow. You're always told the age of the 2 main protagonist at the beginning of each chapter and the date, so even though the scenes aren't exactly chronological it's easy to tell where they fit in the overall story.

I really enjoy time travel stories and this one was enjoyable. If you've watched the movie or the tv show you will definitely like the book.

Nice conclusion to series

I didn't like this book quite as much as much as the previous in the series but it wrapped up things nicely in a fitting conclusion. Part of the issue was that this story was too short. The final battle took up half the book and I feel like there should have been more plot in the middle.

Having said that, all our favorite characters are in this one. The series as a whole has the perfect blend of magic, creatures and familiar fantasy races. This story was no different and with the addition of dragons, what more could you ask for?

Narration was great. I liked the original narrator just a little bit more but Joe Hempel did a great job, it just took a little getting used to. This was made a little easier in that Hempel did a good job matching the accents and voices of the original narrator.

I really enjoyed this series and I'm a little sad to see it ending so soon.

This definitely has all the hallmarks of a Magebreakers adventure. Following all the clues they start to uncover a larger mystery. As their notoriety spreads the duo has a much harder time trying do anything on the down low. I didn't find this book quite as good as the first two but it was still an enjoyable read with great characters.

The narrator changes for this one and it seems like Joe Hempel tried to maintain the same voices from the first two books but he just doesn't do it as well. You can still tell who all the characters are, it just sounds a bit different. Not bad, but I do prefer the first narrator.

Not a well written story

The reason why many reviews are saying this book is boring is because we spend 90% of the story listening to Bishop tell us what is happening. I'm not talking about is perspective, he literally tells us everything, how missions are going, background info, political backdrop, everything. This exposition is broken up here and there by conversations with Skippy. This storytelling style gives us plenty of details to understand what's going on but it's not immersive at all.

The series has basically broken down to this. The Merry Band of Pirates gets into an impossible situation. Bishop asks why they can't do X like previously to get out of situation. Skippy makes up some reason why they can't do that. Bishop does some innocent thing that gives him an idea that Skippy, who could literally run millions of simulations trying every idea possible, fails to think of. The Skippy executes said impossible thing to save everyone. At this point in the series Skippy is a crutch that solves all problems. He's also the comic relief, which I actually do find his interactions funny.

I hope the next installment is more show than tell. The last 25% of this book got a little better in this regard but it falls back on the formula above.

So many things wrong with this story

The author started this story way to early. I'm hours into the story and nothing has happened to move the plot along. We are treated to the MC going about his ordinary life solving fake supernatural cases. We get it, he makes his money solving fake supernatural cases and he's not a believer. I really don't need hours of listening to him solve these mundane cases. Secondly, the main character is a douchebag. His mother tries to set him up with a fat woman so we are treated with plenty of description of why the main character is disgusted by this fat woman. We're given the opposite treatment when he meats an attractive female cop he initially calls PC Hotstuff. So much so that he has a hard time keeping his penis from tenting his pants. The guy is cringy, uses military time for everything and is super health conscious. He's just not relatable at all. I'm hours into the story and nothing supernatural has happened. Author should have just cut the first 100 pages. For something compared to the Dresden files, this falls way short. MC literally fat shames this woman in his head. Actually two women. He describes the first fat woman he meets as needing a boomerang to circumscribe her waist.

Another main issue is the narration. Fullagar narrates with a very dry read. While I don't have a problem telling the characters apart everything is read in the same even keel. Couple that with the boring start to the story and it's just too much, I couldn't finish this book. I'm 5 hours into the story, I still don't know if the vampire murders are being committed by an actual vampire (there's about 5 min of actual time spent investigating this in the 5 hours I've listened to)and I just don't care enough to stick it out.

Gaiman picks a good selection of myths from Norse mythology and he does a remarkable well job of narrating the whole thing.

Pretty Typical Percy Jackson

This story is a pretty typical Percy Jackson adventure that checks all the boxes. Mom sees Percy off, check. Oracle announces cryptic prediction, check. Percy sets off on crazy adventure with a time limit looming while riding magical beasts, all the while mythical monsters try to stop them, check and check. If you loved the earlier Percy books this one delivers much the same.

As for the narrator? He comes off as a dad reading a story to their kids while doing all the goofy voices. The accents are bad, especially the French accent. To be fair, the narrator did have to deal with talking horses, monsters and a plethora of assorted creatures so I can't give him too much flack, but it did seem worse than the previous two books. So much so I had to check to see if it was the same narrator, as the prior two didn't seem that bad.

Great Heist novel set in a unique universe

Six of Crows is a heist novel set in the Grishaverse. This is the first book I've read in that universe so if you're afraid to start out of publication order, don't be. I think there might have been one or two references that were throw away comments that didn't really mean much to me but I didn't feel like I was missing anything and there were no spoilers for other books here. The magic system is unique and interesting. The worldbuilding is very well done.

What really sets this book apart though are the characters. Each one is so different and interesting. I was a bit worried about the different narrators for each character but all them bring these characters to life in a fantastic way. All of the characters are much more nuanced than the live action shadow and bone tv show. I really enjoyed this book.
