Historia
In this classic theological treatise, the acclaimed theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman (1900-1981) demonstrates how the gospel may be read as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of His life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. Hatred does not empower—it decays. Only through self-love and love of one another can God's justice prevail.

Still relevant
Revisado: 01-03-24
I finally listened to this classic and I understand why it earned that status. It’s helpful both for insight into the struggles in segregation and for thinking about how the hounds of hell, as well as Jesus call to love our enemy, are relevant today.

Historia
For all the fullness of God available to his daughters, we often feel limited by two defining insecurities: "I am too much" and "I am not enough". Jess and Hayley felt the same until one essential question turned the tables: If God is wild and free and he created women, what does this mean for us today? Wild and Free is an invitation to find freedom from the cultural captivity that holds us back, and freedom to step into God's wild and holy call in our lives. Jess and Hayley answer difficult questions that so many women have asked them over the years.

A call to live free
Revisado: 12-22-23
I have to be honest and say this book started out slow for me, just because it covered things I’d heard before in the first chapter or so. But then the enthusiasm and encouragement gained momentum and by 2/3 through the book, I found myself thinking this would be a great one to go through with my girlfriends! I love that the book is read by the authors and the alternating is done well.

So Helpful!!
Revisado: 08-24-23
Such a personable book! John narrates it himself and is very conversational, so the listen is more like a well-thought-out podcast. You can easily imagine you hear a mountain stream behind him with his wisdom being dispensed from a peaceful retreat. In this book, he addresses the collective trauma of the pandemic without belaboring the point. This is not a personal gripe. He has analyzed the ways in which we have been collectively and individually affected by the pandemic and related fallout. He both helps bring clarity and understanding for some of the reasons why we (still) feel the ways we do and tools for processing. The book moves along as a guide with helpful practices and prayers. Some I could do as I went through, some I will revisit, and many are worth repeating. I may wait a little while, but this is a rare book in that I plan to re-listen, keeping to walks and quiet spaces, instead of commutes and chores. Or perhaps buy a print copy as well, though I highly recommend the audio version!

Historia
Pastor Tom Doyle has spent 11 years as a full-time missionary in the Middle East and Central Asia, spreading the word of Jesus Christ. Throughout his journey he has encountered a staggering number of Muslims who were first introduced to Jesus through a vision or dream so powerful that they eventually turned from their lifelong religion of Islam and embraced Christ as their Savior. Despite living in a culture where converting to Christianity can result in execution, these former Muslims have found hope, peace, and inspiration that comes from knowing Christ.

Amazing stories
Revisado: 06-20-23
I enjoyed how this comes across as a narrative with so many individual stories. It still gave good overviews of what is happening in each area too. The stories are amazing, the organization is easy to follow, and the narration is excellent.

Historia
Where the Light Fell is a gripping family narrative set against a turbulent time in post-World War II America, shaped by the collision of Southern fundamentalism with the mounting pressures of the civil rights movement and '60s-era forces of social change. In piecing together his fragmented personal history and his search for redemption, Yancey gives testament to the enduring power of our hunger for truth and the possibility of faith rooted in grace instead of fear.

Fitting for this time
Revisado: 01-07-22
I truly enjoyed listening to this memoir. I have only read a small portion of Yancey’s other books, but gained much from them. This, I think, is timely as I have many close to me who are struggling with their faith and who God really is. Yancey’s journey gives me faith and patience for us to find our way back to Jesus in the midst of many phases and questions. I especially loved how personal having the author narrate made it feel.

Historia
The last command Jesus gave the church before he ascended to heaven was the Great Commission, the call for Christians to "make disciples of all the nations.
"But Christians have responded by making "Christians", not "disciples". This, according to brilliant scholar and renowned Christian thinker Dallas Willard, has been the church's Great Omission.

Would like it in print
Revisado: 09-11-16
I enjoyed listening to this book and feel it was beneficial for a better understanding of how to effect the great commission. He describes spiritual formation and its benefits, though more in theory with references to other sources on the disciplines. Basically, it helped me realize why I often just want to spend more time with Jesus and feel uneasy about evangelism the way I learned it 15 years ago.
The print version would be nice to make it easier to review and reference certain parts. In reality, I would have trouble getting though the whole book in print, though, so I enjoy listening even if I may not get as deep of an understanding. The audio version is very well done, so I think it depends on what you have more time for.
