The worst thing about this book is waiting for the next one... it's so good you don't want to put it down but then it's over. Fantastic characters and a great world.

A truly excellent entry in progression fantasy.
Revisado: 03-19-22
First, you can't ever go wrong with narration by Nick Pohdel. There are few narrators who have the range and presence that he does. Now the book. Progression fantasy is a burgeoning genre that has its own set of tropes and pace that can be easily used poorly. While I enjoy the genre the difference between an average book and writers like Will Wight or Andrew Rowe can be wide. It is a tough balancing act to manage both character development and plot with progression without tipping one way or the other. The worldbuilding in Bastion is fantastic and a nice change from common fantasy tropes. The magic system is a good balance between typical magic and cultivation. The story and progression move slowly but not in a way that the pacing feels lacking. The one criticism I have of the book relates to the main character. While I think that making foolish and reckless decisions is within his personality type I am not sure it was perfectly executed. However, I feel like in following entries this will probably be fine as it was mostly well done.

With my core enhanced by runes of power, I'm progressing faster than any cultivator in Acalia. Headed to defeat the Forest Tower, Astra, Brea, Minh and I are ready for whatever this strange world can throw at us. Unfortunately, not all is right in Acalia. With another tower to climb, monsters to kill, and rival cultivators testing me, I'm going to have my hands full. Unforeseen allies and a gorgeous new companion are exactly what we need to make the climb.

Lots of fun
Revisado: 10-01-21
Wasn't sure about this series when I started it with book 1. It started a little slow and I wasn't very invested in the beginning. But man by the end of the first book it was really hitting its stride. Which made me excited to read book 2. Fortunately, unlike some these are coming out quickly. The first book released last month and now this one and it looks like the next will be released in a month. The second book really kept the momentum the second half of the first book had and snowballed it. More characters and interesting things about the world. All of that wrapped up in a package of two of my favorite narrators. Rebecca Woods is probably tied for my #1 favorite narrator. But Daniel is no slouch either.

Alex's life was fairly simple, work during the day and enjoy some sweet RPG's by night. Out of nowhere, he's whisked away to a fantasy world with game-like stats, monsters that drop loot, gorgeous mages, and a Dungeon to explore. With only the clothes on his back and a single skill bestowed upon him, he has to survive this new world and forge a new life for himself. And perhaps work on getting a harem while he’s at it.

Revisado: 09-09-21
Really enjoyed this book. I can't wait to hear the next book. I tried this author's Light Lordy series and man it was so bad. The protagonist was absolutely horrible. But this series was actually really good. Not a terribly unique story. But a fun ride with many isekai tropes common to anime. Kinda feels like a fun amalgamation of Konosuba and Danmachi. Though with an MC that actually has some sense.

Another great book!
Revisado: 02-23-21
This is another great addition to the United States of Monsters series of books. For those who are familiar CT has several other series in this universe. The Bright Falls Mysteries, Esoterrorism, and Fangton. This series connects to the others with character overlap some and other odds and ends. Where the Bright Falls series excels in presenting a Buffy and Riverdale vibe while being very original to itself. Brightblade strikes me more as having a bit of a Constantine vibe. The characters feel fresh and original, though some are from other series. And it could be easily said that several of the side characters feel strong enough in their own story to support a main character narrative of their own. Particularly Alex or Samvrutha are both strong characters that have a great deal of depth and you care about them easily. Overall I am really interested to see where Ashley's story goes next.

Feels like a fully realized comic mythos.
Revisado: 01-11-21
One thing the superhero genre lacks in some books is a fully realized mythos of superhero history behind it. This book does not suffer from that at all. Though in full fairness many times this is because writers often like to start at the beginning of the story of heros and villans getting their powers and how it shapes the world. While a valid approach it lacks some of the feel of authenticity of comics because there isn't this huge wealth of history. This isn't to say the approach is wholly bad... merely it can be less flavored of the comic genre. On the other hand books like this not only provide a world that feels alive but also compelling characters. Ivan and Tori feel like real people with deep motivations and I can't wait for more adventures. I know the second book is out and I just might have to get the kindle because I don't know if I can wait for the audiobook production. Truly amazing work in the genre.

A strong follow-up to book 1
Revisado: 12-28-20
Book 2 of the Wraith Knight series leaves you waiting for book 3 in a positive way. There is clearly more story to tell and you really start to become more deeply invested with the supporting characters and the world. To stay away from spoilers I will explain it a bit more vaguely... Essentially in book 2 by expanding on the world it really sets up the nature of the universe this is set in which has some really interesting elements that I want to see further expanded on. Which I think the story will definitely go there eventually because of the books being from the perspective of Jacob it leaves mystery because we only know what he knows. As supporting characters Regina and Sarah have really started to take up more of the story and it is well done. In book 3 I want to see more of Sarah because her motivations still seem a bit mysterious and purposefully so I think. But I still want to understand her better because she is so conflicted and interesting.

An awesome grim dark fantasy book.
Revisado: 12-27-20
Like most of CT Phipps books the more you understand the genre the more you will appreciate this book. It clearly shows influences in the world building with so many great works of fantasy. The ones that come to mind are Tolkien, Dragon-riders of Pern, the Shannara Saga, and more. To some degree most fantasy books do this but I find this book does well in taking influences from great works in the genre without being derivative of them in such a way that it becomes boring, as some books do. I feel like anyone who enjoys high fantasy or dark fantasy will enjoy this.

Historia
Peter Stone is a poor, black vampire who is wondering where his nightclub, mansion, and sports car is. Instead, he is working a minimum wage job during the night shift, as being a vampire isn't all that impressive in a world where they've come out to mortals. Exiled from the rich and powerful undead in New Detroit, he is forced to go back when someone dumps a newly-transformed vampire in the bathroom of his gas station's store.

Can't stop..
Revisado: 09-07-19
You have to love those books that make you grab the sequel the second you are done with them... Straight Outta Fangton is definitely one of those books. Cary Hite does a great job with the performance being captivating as the main character especially as well as his creator. Add in that every bit of this world is just fantastic in the sense that it acknowledges its own insanity and you are left with a book that is hilarious and captivating. Like much of Phipps' other work it really builds on other nerdy sources like Buffy and True Blood. Which do in fact exist in this world which is fantastic and amusing since most readers will get the references. At the same time while the book does take an amusing look at the world it also has a serious take on the Vampire out of the coffin type world since the main character Peter Stone is nothing like any protagonist the genre is used to. Stone is an African-American and a recently made vampire from downtown New Detroit that spent most of his life trying not to fall into the gang life. He is described as somewhat handsome but not in the traditional sense that one expects from the vampire genre. His creator is powerful and wealthy but does not share this with Peter because he wants him to make his own way in life. This leaves Peter as a gas station clerk with a best friend reminiscent of Randell from Clerks. This series shares that same world and Phipps' Bright Falls Mysteries series which sometimes lightly intersects in small ways in the first book. This is a series that you just cant put down I finished book 1 and 2 in a matter of a day and a half. The mystery and the story just continue to compel you to listen and I highly recommend this book.
