Historia
It’s not easy serving Chernobog, the God of Destruction, Darkness and Death…especially during the holidays; and especially when you’re out of eggnog and one of your pesky, freeloading mythic creatures has eaten your last cookie. Roman would like nothing more than to be left alone, but when a wounded boy stumbles into his yard and begs for sanctuary, Roman takes him in. Now elite mercenaries are camped out on his property, combat mages are dousing the house with fire, and strange priests are unleashing arcane magic.

It was really difficult to follow the story
Revisado: 08-10-24
The parts of the story I could grasp were interesting and I enjoyed learning about Slavic folklore/stories but the story line was hectic and I couldn’t follow it easily. I may listen again to try and give it another go but I may return it. The characters were well considered and likable. It was interesting to listen to a story in modern time but with old tradition and roles.

Weak ending
Revisado: 07-02-24
I enjoyed the series but I was really disappointed with the ending. It was undeveloped and lacking in creativity. I understand what the author was going for but it sucked and I expected better. It was weak and now I’m bitter about it.

It would have been a good story but it was all-in on god
Revisado: 12-05-22
I really enjoyed the Apothecary’s Daughter. The characters were so enjoyable and the story moved well. So I ordered the painter’s daughter thinking it would be a similarly well developed story but it read more like a sponsored post by christianity. The story was good ish and the characters were good ish, especially Wesley (he was jerk who you really thought would change but didn’t and it was interesting to go on that roller coaster) but there were so many references to “Him” and god that it felt forced. It didn’t seem like the same caliber of work from this author and she leaned in too much on the god talk. I started to roll my eyes half way through the book. Plus there were a lot of unanswered questions or plot lines that weren’t wrapped up:
1) Angela Blake promised never to marry then she was engaged.
2) what happened to Sophie’s step mom. Her dad showed up at the end of the story and just hung around with no mention
3) Wesley was disinherited and never got pissed. I would have loved to have read that letter or seen his overly dramatic hissy fit
Just not the book I thought it would be.
Also the narrator should have been female. It would have fit.

It was ok
Revisado: 04-28-22
It is a story that passes the time but it was just ok. The characters are ok, the story is over the top at times, the romance is ok. It is what it is and serves its purpose but I won’t be listening to the third.

Predicable
Revisado: 05-25-20
This book is predictable in everything and it doesn't do any of it well. The king doesn't act very kingly. The prince seems like a Hallmark movie prince in that he is masterful and kind, tall and handsome while completely obsessed with the heroine at first sight. He is also oddly muscular which keeps being mentioned but not explained like it was thrown in to show that he is manly (?) The heroine is typical. There is no real character development and no research done on what being a king, prince, or servant was really like or the roles that these people played in history in this quasi medieval/regency/modern story.

This story could be compelling but it falls flat
Revisado: 02-10-17
Would you try another book from Helen Bryan and/or Kate Reading?
I would and have listened to many books read by Kate Reading. She is one of my favorite narrators.
I will not choose another book by Helen Bryan.
Would you ever listen to anything by Helen Bryan again?
No, Helen Bryan has the makings of a very good book here but she abandons characters, leads readers on winding story line and drops it. To say I was disappointed is a large understatement.
What does Kate Reading bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Everything. She has great accents and reads for both men and women well. She infuses a lot of emotion and personality in each character. Plus, I find her voice comforting.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger, great disappointment and a feeling of being cheated. I listened to this book to the end and the characters that I got to know were cast aside or given no more than a token closing like they were nothing important.
Any additional comments?
I am dumbfounded that this book made it through editing. Several characters I don't even understand properly what happened and several more were sort of shoved out of the story so we could get onto the second book. I think as an invested reader that I deserved better than this poor effort.
