okay, leaving another review.
Revisado: 02-03-24
I remember there used to be a way to edit reviews, but I forgot. or maybe things changed during an update for mobile. But anyway, this is why I am making a second review.
So, for my first review I said this story was dissapointing, but at that point, I had like 2 hours left of reading and felt like I'd seen enough. However, after getting to the end, I changed my mind. Honestly, Byron was a bastard and I hated him to the point I even began to root for the ghost in the end. I know there's never any justification for murder but I really felt bad for the shit the ghost went through. Anyway, I take back all I said the first time around (well, except the part about Byron/Andrew not being more interesting as characters).

Author needs to be on a watch list
Revisado: 12-14-23
literally why tf is a 14 year old being pushed into a relationship with an adult??? And why are all the other so called adults acting as if that's normal? The lengths the author goes to to pretend this isn't weird when it's already weird when you consider the fact that Nico is in actuality 50 years old in human years. What's crazier is that it was uncomfortable at the start of the story. But I tried not to think about it by telling myself, okay, if I ignore the dragon years he's "17" and she's 15, likely going on 16, soon, it's not that bad. But then the creepy ass author decides to AGE NICO UP into a full adult and then made even even worse by revealing the girl isn't actually even 15 yet, but a 14 year old going on 15. If I didn't already make the mistake of purchasing this book I would have stopped reading at that point.
the girl being 14 served no other point to the plot other than making this story feel disgusting to read.
Honestly, this book would have been so much better without all the forced, cringe romance. The author is lucky that the premise is interesting enough to make a lot of people look past that. I did finish the book, unfortunately, and I am willing to see what happen next.
So, my advice to the author for the next books is to stop writing romance and just focus on the progression fantasy because that part is actually good. Anyway, just stop pulling readers into your weird ass fantasies and stick to writing the main story, story writer!

Too much joking...
Revisado: 12-08-23
I wanted to like this, I really did, but it's just non-stop humor. I knew it was aiming to be comedic, but the author doesn't know how to properly balance the humor. It's like those Marvel movies but on crack. Everything is played off for a witty joke. It's like each line is written to have a punch. I don't know how anyone can become immersed or emotionally invested in this story or the characters when nothing is taken seriously. Feels like this was written for middle schoolers who have a hard time concentrating. I'm shocked it has so many positive reviews.

KILLED THE VIBE, at least for me.
Revisado: 07-30-23
Up until now, I've been completely enraptured with this story, and so I went into this volume wanting to love it just as much as the previous ones, but unfortunately, I find myself having lost a majority of my interest in reading. Though, my feelings on this could change since I am putting out this review before I finish the book (if I finish the book).
(spoilers ahead)
There's been a lot of little things so far that have been slight turn offs, but what hammered the final nail in the coffin has got to be the complete character assassination of Bane in this volume. While Bane is supposed to be the bad guy (the author tries REALLY hard to push this narrative by demonizing him for off-ing the rich war-mongering tyrants at the top that have caused decades of suffering to the lower class) despite the fact that, aside from Roan, almost every single character in this story has just as much if not more blood on their hands than Bane does. Literally, it was so cringe to see someone like freaking Rhea (Raya?) of all people calling Bane a murderer as if she hadn't fully intended to genocide Gwen's race of people. Like you can't tell me Bane killing people like the Dread King, the Iron Clad King, or Vin Hosuh (?) who were all HORRIBLE people is somehow worse than the shit some of these other characters have done.
But that's not the worst part. The worst part for me is that the boy who literally killed Empress Sun Sands for taking part in a war with Phanes ( Sorry, I spent a majority listening to this audio so I don't know how any of these names are spelled so I might be butchering) when she had yet to really do anything with the Begger, and even tried to eliminate Vin Hosuh's slave army simply because of their existence as an army itself would then turn around and start his OWN army. But that's not all. The boy who was literally obsessed with Western Oracle's prophecy THAT SAID he was supposed to KILL THE RULERS, the prophecy by which gave him his name the King's BANE (like it's literally in his NAME) now wants to BE the new king after ranging WAR across the 4 kingdoms). Literally he's going against not only the prophecy but every action he's taken up until that point.
And I'm sure this is supposed to be some "gotcha" moment to show how psychotic and evil Bane truly is, but all it does is give me flashbacks to the Batman movie with the Riddler. Anytime a "bad guy" is making too much sense, they always have to make them do some psychotic shit towards the end because they're the bad guys, you know, and the good guys need a reason to be the good guys.
And, no, I'm not at all saying that Bane is some perfect character or hero. He's shown to not have all that great a judgement on more than a few occasions. But this whole "become a war mongering tyrant and new King of all the 4 kinddoms" just feels like a complete 180 from his original intentions. But idk maybe I missed a chapter or two or something.
Lastly (because this is already so long), I just want to point out some other questionable things. While the author tries really hard to write empowering women (good job), he seems really obsessed with romance to the point it starts to feel really forced, particularly with Rhea and Raven Sands. Why is it that a man in this book can't be fiercely loyal to a woman without them having romantic interest in them? The shit with her cousin Ennis was just so weird and unnecessary imho, especially because he's old af compared to her. Did the author really have to tack on that as Ennis' reason for having her back???
Also with Roan. He already has Gwen and Garreth. Why are you also hinting towards romantic relations with the girl from his childhood at the Citadel? The hell is this? A harem???

They are the fatemarked. Misunderstood. Worshipped. Hated. Murdered at birth. Their time to step into the light has come. An ancient prophecy foretold their coming, the chosen few who will bring peace to a land embroiled in a century of mistrust and war. When kings start dying, that hope and belief swiftly turns to fear. Roan Loren is one of the fatemarked, but has hidden his mark of power his entire life, fearing the damage it might cause to those around him. A great evil is coming. He can't hide anymore.

Very enjoyable!
Revisado: 07-19-23
Firstly, I must say thank you to the reviewers who were complaining about "pushing a political agenda" or whatever nonsense that triggers those types of "sensitive" people, because thanks to them, I was able to discover a truly enjoyable story. I was honestly going to give this a skip until I saw their reviews making me aware that there were some lgbt elements involved. It's not often to come across fantasy stories like this.
Anyways, this story is a lot more than just that. It is filled with amazing world building and interesting characters. The premise and power system also feels very fresh and makes me excited to just get to the next book already! So yeah, I wish my review could be longer, but I'm pretty much in a rush here! Later, and I hope you read!

It's the Riddler all over again.
Revisado: 01-04-23
Like from the lastest Batman movie, this book kind of suffers from the same issue where the "villains" are actually making complete sense but since they are the "Villains" their role in the story can't allow them to be in the right (cause as the villains, we aren't suppose to support or agree with them over the main protagonist ya know!), so instead, the story makes the Villains do the most heinous acts to undermined their (VALID) points.
But the truth is as much as this story tries to convince you that the "villains" were wrong it just feels really forced. It's to the point where I just stopped caring about what happened to either side in the end. At one point, when one of the antagonists points out how they don't get a choice in how they live their lives and are ripped away from their families at children one of the protagonists has the freaking audacity to simplify this as just "well, you shouldn't fight back just because you hate obligation!" as if this "obligation" isn't literally total control over their very lives. Like magicians are despises by the people they are forced to serve and are alone in the world because they were taken from their families....bffr.
Also, the founding magicians were dumb as shit. How tf do escape from one world where humans hate you to a completely new world where you have the power to create your own form of government and even can use magic spells to trick humans into believing whatever narrative you want, but instead of building up a new society run by Magicians where Magic and Magicians are adored by humans, you instead make an almost copy of the same exact world you were forced to escape from because humans hated magic and magicians, but now it's even worse because magicians now are essentially slaves to humans. LIKE BFFR.
Anyway, aside from these points, I would say the story is alright. NOT great. just alright.
Anyway, other than this,

Revisado: 01-04-23
Although the ending kinda makes me wanna shout expletives, the whole story was great! I really appreciate the fact that the author also didn't bother with the needless "miscommunication" cliches that are always too long drawn out and too long agonizing. Communication is actually tackled very well in this book. Also, while I was kinda pissed at Bailey for a bit toward the end (bc who tf are you to act as if your brother owes your father forgiveness? But lmao I probably felt that way because of my own rocky relationship with my parents that feel a little too close to what Micky is going through with his. ) but anyway, she made up for it in the end. Anyways, my final words is that this story is a lot about learning how to heal and move forward.

Alexander Dumsky, or Alex Doom, was a dark wizard. At the age of 17, he was convicted of a litany of crimes so long that even the seasoned investigators, judges, and prosecutors involved in the case could only shudder. Not a single attorney could be found to defend him in court. But four years later, Alex was released from prison to become the professor of dark magic. They'd thrown him into the deepest hole they could find, one built for the sole purpose of holding wizards, and then they let him back out again...Why him? Why then?

Already I feel like I've made a mistake with this purchase. The MC feels instantly unlikable for some reason, and even though I'm not even at chapter 2 yet, judging by some of the other negative reviews, I can tell this gut feeling was spot on. My gut is also telling me that the person who wrote this book can't be younger than 30. I mean, You can just tell by how they write about him smoking cigarettes that they think it's some cool and edgy trait or something but it just kinda makes the MC come off as lame. That and his "im a wise guy" attitude. Like we get it, you're a big bad asshole criminal who spent their childhood in Wizard juvie. I can tell it will only get worse from there too.

Meh.
Revisado: 10-21-22
So, I'm about 30 chapters in and it's a pretty decent story. The only thing I would say, and these are just minor nitpicks, is that I wish the author toned it down a bit with the romance, or attempts at one anyway. It's super annoying reading about the main character gushing over their crush every other line. Imagine if Alex was a girl and while you're here to read about action and adventure and magic every other line is about her drooling over her companion's sparkly eyes or muscular arms. Like, what is this? The Twilight Saga? c'mon now. Like we get it. He's thirsty. Can we focus on the story now and not the generic strong female love interest who is cool because she's pretty and was raised with brothers and uses an sword and likes to hunt! She's totally not like other girls, ya know!
Also, the little sister is annoying too. I know she's like 10 but she's so whiny. Would rather if Alex was an orphan who grew up in a dog eat dog alone, which would give him reason enough not to care about joining the rest of the heroes. Make him want to get strong to protect himself and never be looked down upon again. Maybe have some new companions he meets along the way, companions who may change his world view.
And lastly, if I hear him say "Think! Adapt!" One more time I-
other than that, story's interesting.
edit:
okay.... So, I'm almost done. There's about 3 hours left. I thought at this point I would have gotten more hooked on the story but truth is im not particularly all that moved. I'm not even sure what the exact reason is because I've definitely read worse, but I just feel like this story did not live up to my expectations. The first summary peaked my interest and the first chapter was pretty fun, but everything else after just felt kind of underwhelming. I feel like the characters aren't that interesting, and are sometimes even annoying - Alex especially. To be honest, the only character that feels like they have a personality who I'd probably want to know about is Lucia, the freaking Sky Gondola guide!
I feel like compared to the overarching storyline with the five heroes everything else is just boring.
