Historia
What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling debut from Mhairi McFarlane. Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away. They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.

Took a minute to get used to
Revisado: 08-21-23
I was hesitant on this one at first on the narrator but with a bit of time, I got used to her accent and ended up enjoying it in the end. Love the author and all of her books.

Historia
Sally Milz is a sketch writer for The Night Owls, a late-night live comedy show that airs every Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she’s long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life. But when Sally’s friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actress who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show.

Really enjoyed this one! A fun, light and clever romance set against the backdrop of an SNL-like show. Will read again and would recommend.

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

A delightful listen that had me cackling in laughter at times and misty eyed at other. Everyone needs a GUP in their life. Highly recommend. Looking forward to rereading in the future.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Really enjoyed the multiple narrators on this one. The book is quite different from the others by the same author but a good twist (though, I like some of the others more!). Excited to check out the new show to see how it compares

A New Favorite

Loved the depth and richness of the characters and story. While it was clear where things were headed for our main characters - the journey for how we got there kept things interesting, full of emotion and laughter along the way. Will read again

Historia
Lore arrives at the hospital alone - no husband, no partner, no friends. Her birth plan is explicit: She wants no fetal monitor, no IV, no epidural. Franckline, a nurse in the maternity ward - herself on the verge of showing - is patient with the young woman. She knows what it's like to worry that something might go wrong, and she understands the distress when it does. She knows as well as anyone the severe challenge of childbirth, what it does to the mind and the body.

Interesting read! Doesn’t feel finished.
Revisado: 01-05-23
Interesting read - exploring unique relationship dynamics between lovers, friends, and strangers will also taking a look at the less perfect side of modern childbirth (very different from how it’s depicted in movies). I struggled a bit with the resolution at the end… almost as if the author ended the novel before the story was done.

What to listen to after What to Expect.... A badass, feminist, and personal deep-dive into the science and culture of pregnancy and early motherhood that debunks myths and dated assumptions, offering guidance and camaraderie to women navigating one of the biggest and most profound changes in their lives. Like most first-time mothers, Angela Garbes was filled with questions when she became pregnant. What exactly is a placenta? How does a body go into labor? Why is breast best? What are the signs and effects of postpartum depression?

Really enjoyed this one overall. Thought the author dug into and touched on some really important topics. Definitely not your typical pregnancy read, in the best way possible. Planning to buy the print edition to spend more time with the content.

Revisado: 04-25-22
I still can’t decide if it’s the writing, or the narration, or both but I seem to always fall in love with this author’s male lead characters and this might be my favorite one yet. Great read - highly recommend and look forward to rereading in a few months. @Mrs. Jimenez, if you’re reading this… I’d love a book from you with a person of color in the lead role.

Historia
Venus McGee, Draya Carter, and Jackie Benson are coworkers with a lot in common. They’re smart, independent, driven, and deserving of recognition - certainly more than they’ve been handed by a demoralizing boss. He’s the topic of conversation at their impromptu get-together after the company holiday party, where the threesome fantasizes about a life without him. There has to be an alternative to taking a deep breath and sucking it up. There is. It’s just not the one they expected. When morning comes, Venus, Draya, and Jackie are blindsided by murder....

Bad Decision After Bad Decision
Revisado: 01-31-22
Before purchasing, I had read someone else’s review noting their frustration with the characters and their constant bad decisions. That reviewer said they couldn’t even finish it. At the time, I didn’t think much of the review and went ahead with buying. However, I can now fully understand where that reviewer was coming from.
I was able to finish the book but by the second half, I found myself feeling frustrated with their reasoning and rationalizing of making bad decisions over and over again. It didn’t feel relatable necessarily… I mostly just felt annoyed with each of them.
And while I liked the female friendship and support that underpins the story… it simply wasn’t quite enough to make up for the above endless poor decisions.
