Historia
They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

Three Books Isn't Enough
Revisado: 04-17-25
I finished the trilogy before writing this. These three books give some good context for the beginning of the Savage Wars, but ONLY the beginning. There's plenty of room for expansion here, based on the timeline that was established in Galaxy's Edge and I hope the authors will get around to continuing this series. Regardless, the books were good.
The narration was pretty good, as well. Stephen Lang is no RC Bray, but he has a decent range of character voices. Just one side not that's not good or bad, just an observation: his normal voice sounds like Brain from Pinky and the Brain.

The Legion is the most elite direct-action force in the galaxy, hammering the enemies of the Republic...but some missions require a scalpel. When radical insurgents shoot down a covert republic flight at galaxy’s edge, a nearby Legion recovery team is sent to recover the crew and keep the flight’s VIP—a doctor overseeing clandestine research and development—from falling into enemy hands.

Decent Story, Hard Miss on the Narration
Revisado: 01-23-25
The story is on the weaker side of Galaxy's Edge installations. I guess I would call it mildly interesting. However, I'm sure it would have been a much better experience with a different narrator. He sounds a lot like Nick Chinlund, who I remember from The X-Files, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not right for a military SciFi. As it is, I would recommend skipping this book.

Historia
On Detron, a simmering protest boils over and turns deadly when militants hiding among the demonstrators deliberately shoot down a group of legionnaires, executing one survivor and taking two for ransom. The only Republic asset the captured leejes can rely on is a lone marine sniper who defies orders in a desperate attempt to save them. But a troubled sea of hostile riots, looting, and murder is too much for anyone to navigate safely.

A Decent Entry
Revisado: 01-08-25
This one is a weaker addition to the series. It's very political an has some obvious analogies to modern parties. The authors take a right wing approach, as usual, so most of the book is disparaging left wing politics (even though the authors apparently support some left wing ideals, such as universal health care and government funded education). To me, this is kind of like the right wing's version of wokeism. Most people don't want it disrupting their media consumption and find it annoying (although, I will admit that where this political messaging is tedious, wokeism is actively insidious).
I found myself tempted multiple times to start skipping ahead, which is a rare occurrence for me with the Galaxy's Edge books. In the end though, I finished it without skipping and found it mildly enjoyable. I don't think I would recommend spending a credit on this, but if you can pick it up on sale it's probably worth getting.
One last note: I wasn't a fan of Ray Porter at first, but I came around after a while. He does some really great character voices!

A Weak Entry in Galaxy's Edge
Revisado: 09-12-24
This book was very light on story progression. There is some, but it is mostly just kind of dull battle tactics. Don't get me wrong, I have greatly enjoyed the battle scenes in Galaxy's Edge up to this point; this one was just not very interesting. It almost seems like a filler book that should have been a .5 entry.
The narration was superb, as usual.
Is it worth a credit? Well, if you're this far into the series, it's probably worth getting still.

More Anti-Woke Fun
Revisado: 05-23-24
This one deviated from the typical Galaxy's Edge formula, (which I consider to be 75% Star Wars with the rest being a mix of Warhammer 40k and Mass Effect) and is more of a military fiction. It could very easily be a war story set in Afghanistan without changing much. About 25% of this book was spy thriller, which I don't particularly care for, so that lowers my rating a bit. It also took a while to get used to Ray Porter. He did a good job, but R.C. Bray is a better fit for this series.
My only other criticism is that the Zhee, who up until this point have been a pretty obvious allegory for the aggressive, radicalized elements of middle eastern culture, were suddenly talking and acting like gangsta thugs from 90s LA (holding their pistols sideways, proudly referring to each other as donks [a word meant to be derogatory], wearing bling and grills, etc.). While that was an amusing parody, it felt out of place and would have been better used on a different species whose cultural Identity wasn't already well established.
Overall though, the story continues to deliver an interesting plot with good character development and most importantly, a lack of woke bs. I consider this to have been a credit well spent.

Few know the warship’s actual name. But everyone has heard the rumors. The PUV James Keeling can do something no other vessel in existence can do—slip into another dimension, travel undetected, then re-emerge onto our plane and surprise enemy targets. But the thing that makes the Crypt unique also makes it a nightmare for those onboard; interdimensional travel causes hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychotic breakdowns. Keeling could be the Union’s greatest weapon, a game-changing asset that can defeat the bloodthirsty zealots of the Purist Nation, the Union’s mortal enemy.

Cosmic Dread is an Exaggeration
Revisado: 03-26-24
When I look for books on Audible, I always check the 1 star reviews first because they are the best way to get a feel for the book, imo. In the 1 stars for this book, the complaints were mostly about violence and gore, with one person who was apparently engaged by sci-fi in general bashing religion. Those are all strong selling points for me, so I didn't even read past the 1 stars in this case.
Overall, the book was pretty good. I was expecting something a bit more Lovecraftian like Event Horizon, but it was more like the military sections of The Expanse. The epilogue did give some hope for a more Lovecraftian turn in the next book, so I'll probably check it out eventually. I also should note that I really didn't find it to be that violent. In fact, I thought I was a pretty tame considering the events taking place. Furthermore, I found the author's estimation of the religious mindset to be spot on.
Lastly, the voice acting was well done. He implemented a wide array of voices, making the characters easy to differentiate. There weren't many (if any) mispronunciations and he doesn't have any regional dialect quirks that break the immersion, such as pronouncing or as ar (harrar instead of horror is a common one).

Light Hearted Frippery
Revisado: 03-15-24
This was listed as fantasy for adults but I'd say it's aimed more at tweens. I have no idea why this book has so many good reviews, but I absolutely hated it. The plot itself isn't bad and I can imagine myself enjoying it, had it been presented in a more x-files or hardboiled kind of way. instead, it was told from the perspective of a cowardly weakling who, when he is not making some idiotic joke or Spiderman style flippant remark, is belligerent for no other reason than to be belligerent. I don't know if this is a personal power fantasy of the author's or what, but the main character interacts in a totally unrealistic, antagonistic way with anyone who could possibly be dangerous to him. With the exception of the "A Crown for Cold Silver" series, this book has the worst character writing, dialogue and inner monologuing I have ever encountered!
All you really need to know about this book to tell whether you'll like it or not is that there is an entire chapter about the main character wearing a taco fairy tu tu outfit. I find that style of humor to be utterly obnoxious and juvenile. It's hard to fathom how anyone can be so easily amused as to find this entertaining.

This pretty much is what the title says. Many of the stories/novellas here will have only been done in limited print runs, such as in fanzines, magazines, pamphlets, special editions or online magazines. It’s a mixed genre of stories and these are what Brian considers the best of the rest of the stories in his body of work. We’ve got 111,000+ words in this collection so that means lots of enjoyment in what is likely the last collection coming from Brian.
