Historia
Two childhood friends from Scotland and two illegitimate half-brothers from the deep South suffer and enjoy all manner of bizarre adventures that, it turns out, are somehow interconnected and, even more surprisingly, meaningful. The eclectic cast of characters features Socrates, Carl Jung, and Tony Randall, along with an ex-television evangelist with a penchant for booze, prostitutes, and uncomfortable knitwear who gets mugged in Miami by an almost pure-blooded Watusi warrior - and sets off on a road trip in a stolen motor home.

Great performance and a fun story.
Revisado: 12-20-23
The story is fun and oddly sweet with tons of little surprises throughout. But the real highlight is the great performance.

Historia
Set adrift by his pirate crew, Pocket of Dog Snogging - last seen in The Serpent of Venice - washes up on the sun-bleached shores of Greece, where he hopes to dazzle the Duke with his comedic brilliance and become his trusted fool. But the island is in turmoil. Egeus, the Duke’s minister, is furious that his daughter Hermia is determined to marry Demetrius, instead of Lysander, the man he has chosen for her. The Duke decrees that if, by the time of the wedding, Hermia still refuses to marry Lysander, she shall be executed...or consigned to a nunnery.

Delightful performance.
Revisado: 12-10-23
Euan Morton’ performance truly elevates this book. I will listen to all of the other books in this series in audio form only because this is such an enjoyable performance. The story is diverting and mostly interesting. My only complaint is that we are told by one of the characters who has secret knowledge that the central mystery should be able to be logically deduced from the clues given. The actual solution is quite convoluted, so the murder mystery aspect doesn’t really work, but as Shakespearean farce it is entertaining.

Historia
In 1927, South Africa passes the Immorality Act, prohibiting sexual intercourse between “Europeans” (white people) and “natives” (Black people). Those who break the draconian new law face imprisonment—for men of up to five years; for women, four years. Abram and his wife Alisa have their share of marital problems, but they also have a comfortable life in South Africa with their two young girls. But then the Act is passed. Alisa is black, and their two children are now evidence of their involvement in a union that has been criminalized by the state.

Wonderful narration and lyrical prose
Revisado: 11-17-23
The highlights of this book are the poetic prose which is made even better by the entrancing narration. This book is also a great meditation on how we create identities for ourselves. The story itself was a bit more open ended than I would have liked. But overall this was very enjoyable.

Interesting, but could have delved deeper.
Revisado: 05-17-23
This book had some interesting examples and case studies, but could have delved much deeper. A lot was just common sense or information that anyone who’s paying attention probably already has. There are much better books about the flawed ways our brains parse the world, but this is a decent introduction for someone new to the topic. The author has a decent sense of humor which makes this less dry than some cognitive science books.

Historia
The emergence of strange new diseases is a frightening problem that seems to be getting worse. In this age of speedy travel, it threatens a worldwide pandemic. We hear news reports of Ebola, SARS, AIDS, and something called Hendra killing horses and people in Australia - but those reports miss the big truth that such phenomena are part of a single pattern. The bugs that transmit these diseases share one thing: they originate in wild animals and pass to humans by a process called spillover. David Quammen tracks this subject around the world.

Historia
When the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn's accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive world of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories.

Interesting and thought provoking.
Revisado: 12-20-21
In the style of Bill Bryson or Mary Roach the author takes a seemingly mundane topic and delves into its hidden complexities. Though not as deftly written as a Bryson or Roach book, this is an interesting and illuminating story.
The narrator does a solid job when he is reading from the voice of the author, but when the author is in conversation with another person, the performer adopts a really dorky voice. Clearly he is trying to make the voice sufficiently different that there is no ambiguity about who is speaking, but the voice he chooses is awkward and off-putting.
Overall, it’s worth a listen though.

Historia
First published in 1903, this groundbreaking work is a cornerstone of African American literary history and a foundational text in the field of sociology. In these fourteen essays, W. E. B. Du Bois introduces and explores the concept of “double-consciousness”—a term he uses to describe the experience of living as an African American and having a “sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others.” Though an examination of Black life in post-Civil War America, The Souls of Black Folk has had a lasting impact on civil rights and the discussion of race in the United States.

Great performance and sometimes brilliant writing but most of the characters lead sad and empty lives, so it’s best to listen to these stories in small chunks.

I feel bad saying I loved this book because It couldn't exist without people being truly awful, but Amber and Lacey are great story tellers and it's important that this awfulness gets exposed. This is a master class in turning pain into humor.

Really good prose, but flawed story.
Revisado: 05-09-21
The writing was deft and interesting but the story required every single character to be unbelievably oblivious. The premise was so dependent on every character not noticing obvious things that it was hard to suspend disbelief. Still, I would try other works by this author just on the strength of the prose.
