Lovely story. Perfect escapism!
Revisado: 03-26-24
The story was charming and for the most part, the narration was great. I know I am being very finicky, but the French and German pronunciations were painfully bad (thankfully few and far between). I found it surprising though, since that particular narrator was wonderful in everything other way!

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Had to return
Revisado: 08-27-23
I think the problem was the narrator. I couldn't listen to him. Over dramatic and yet monotone, he just went on and on.
I was annoyed and bored.
Pitty, I so wanted to hear the story but just couldn't stand him!

Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

The story, the writing, and the narration of this book are all wonderful. It is a very hard story, but one that should be told. I was completely entrenched and could not stop listening. I highly recommend it.

Took a while to get into but beautiful
Revisado: 01-26-23
I thought I'd return this during the first hour or do of listening. I was simply bored. But then I got into it and couldn't stop. I am not a prude, but while necessary for the last turn of events, the end the, in depth details of the "love act" was kind of unnecessary/annoying to me. All in all, I enjoyed the descriptions, the historical aspect and the narrator was great!

Entertaining story.
Revisado: 01-23-23
I found myself looking forward to listening to this story whenever I had time. It's not deep literature, but entertaining, and the descriptions of a small town in Sicily, the beauty of the surroundings, and the colorful characters then and now are stop on! The narrator was very good. As the main character, her mispronunciations of Italian words and heavy English accent work perfectly. The few times that she speaks for the locals, her accent is a bit jarring. All in all, I highly recommend this book! It takes you away and is a good listen.

I enjoyed this immensely! Sweet, funny, and endearing. the characters are beautifully portrayed, and the story is "feel good." The end is a bit simplistic, but overall, I loved it and was sad to finish it.

Nope...
Revisado: 11-18-22
Remember Daniel Steel? It was ages ago but I think she was better. For me, this was a flimsy romantic soft porn. It was agravating because the setting New Orleans and the old haunted house could have been chilling and wonderful, but the ghost parts were silly and repetitive, the characters weren't solid and the accents were terrible. People either sounded Irish or Italian 🤦♀️. I am really disappointed.

Historia
In this novel of the glittering and gritty Jazz Age, a young aspiring photographer named Dorothea Lange arrives in San Francisco in 1918. As a newcomer - and naïve one at that - Dorothea is grateful for the fast friendship of Caroline Lee, a vivacious, straight-talking Chinese American with a complicated past, who introduces Dorothea to Monkey Block, an artists’ colony and the bohemian heart of the city. Dazzled by Caroline and her friends, Dorothea is catapulted into a heady new world of freedom, art, and politics.

Interesting
Revisado: 11-17-22
The story portrays an interesting perspective on part of San Francisco history. I appreciated the real, big names and hope that the portrayal of their characters had some truth in their real lives. The narrator was good except her pronunciation of foreign language words was one of the worst I have ever heard.

Historia
Jacqueline Saper, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, was born in Tehran to Iranian and British parents. At 18 she witnessed the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times, including the Iran-Iraq War. In a deeply intimate and personal story, Saper recounts her privileged childhood in prerevolutionary Iran and how she gradually became aware of the paradoxes in her life and community - primarily the disparate religions and cultures.

I didn't know much about Iranian history of the past 50 years, and I found this book both interesting and entertaining. The Narrator was good but a little mechanical. She sounded like she was reading carefully.
