Historia
Piper cycles off one hot Oklahoma evening for a sleepover with her new friend, Miley, from summer camp. But when she doesn’t come home, her grandparents raise the alarm. Their little angel is missing, last seen on her pink bicycle, heading toward the dark woods on Black Heart Lane. Detective Kimberley King knows that the first 24 hours in a missing-child investigation are the most critical, but with no witnesses, and darkness falling in the small town of Dead Woman Crossing, she begins to fear the worst.

Narrator ruined this
Revisado: 12-23-24
I almost stopped this book and never looked back based on the narration, especially chapter 2. The piercing voice she depicted as toddler Jessica, along with the dramatic acting out of her pauses and whining about made my ears bleed. Shame because I really like Jeneva Rose and have been enjoying the Kimberley King storyline. Please find a new narrator to continue the series!

Weird Narration
Revisado: 11-30-24
The narration really took away from the story because it was so terrible. Narrator had a breathy, raspy voice, and when reading the parts of Nick, who was supposed to be in his mid 30s, she made him sound like he was about 80 years old with weird vocal inflections. Think elderly Jimmy Stewart. If I was Freida, I would have had this renarrated.

Analysis: A Macat Analysis of Émile Durkheim's On Suicide

Historia
Sociologist Émile Durkheim's 1897 work On Suicide is a powerful evidence-based study of why people take their own lives. In the late 19th century it was generally accepted that each suicide was an individual phenomenon, caused by such personal factors as grief, loss, and financial problems. But Durkheim felt there were patterns in suicide rates, and believed that a more likely cause of suicide lay in the individual's relationship to society.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-10-23
This was not analytical in the slightest. It felt like material to be used if you were tasked with explaining Durkheim to 10 year olds. Structurally, it was highly segmented, and each segment gave a recap of the previous one, so each new segment ended up having maybe 3 minutes of original content. Narration was excellent, though.

Historia
The Great Peace is a harrowing, heartbreaking coming-of-age story set in Hollywood, in which young teenage model-turned-actor Mena Suvari lost herself to sex, drugs, and bad, often abusive relationships even as blockbuster movies made her famous. It's about growing up in the '90s, with a soundtrack ranging from The Doors to Deee-Lite, fashion from denim to Day-Glo, and a woman dealing with the lasting psychological scars of abuse, yet knowing deep inside she desires so much more from life.

Narration Distracted From Story
Revisado: 08-07-23
Mena's voice was so monotone and slow it sounded like she was half asleep and struggling to get her words out. The story held my interest, and I feel for her struggles, however, it got a little tiresome hearing about her sobbing all the time. And the "near death experience" was blown way out of proportion.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

Good Listen, So-so Performance
Revisado: 06-27-23
This was a nice listen and held my interest, but I have to say the performance was a little slow and childlike which was a bit annoying. Other reviewers say that it was tear jerking, but I didn't find that to be true. It was just an easy listen.

Historia
In this fascinating narrative, therapist Catherine Gildiner presents five of what she calls her most heroic and memorable patients. Among them: A successful, first-generation Chinese immigrant musician suffering sexual dysfunction; a young woman whose father abandoned her at age nine with her younger siblings in an isolated cottage in the depth of winter; and a glamorous workaholic whose narcissistic, negligent mother greeted her each morning of her childhood with "Good morning, Monster". Each patient presents a mystery, one that will only be unpacked over years.

Good book that the narrator RUINED
Revisado: 03-01-23
I am appalled at the narrator's choice to use racist accents when narrating the parts of the non white patients. If the patient was male it is fine to lower the reading voice to create a bit of distinction (assuming the male has a lower voice than the therapist), however, adding the slow affect, pauses, and accents when speaking was just insulting. very disappointed. content was amazing, just hard to focus on when you're angry the whole time.

Not what I hoped for
Revisado: 01-16-23
This book fell flat for me. It wasn't so much of a memoir as...well, I don't know how to describe it. There seemed to be a lot of reading lists. It didn't flow as a story the way an audiobook should. Perhaps it would have hit differently if I read the hard copy. A particularly low moment of the book was when Ana was recounting a lengthy conversation with a male friend in chapter 31. Back and forth for several minutes it was "And then I said, and then he said, and then I was like, and then he was like" over and over again. I think Ana is a funny and talented actress, but unfortunately this book is not one of her better works.

Great Story, Over Performed
Revisado: 08-29-22
I really did enjoy the content of this book, but it was just way too theatrical in its narration. I like vocal inflection and emotion in narration but Molly was just way over the top. I kept thinking she was building up to something huge, but no, she was just describing how great it was when her dad demeaned cashiers and tried to swindle people. I was hoping at some point she or her father had realized how nasty he was in his young days as her father, but she described it gleefully. Kind of strange not to at least mention that she realizes now what he did was wrong. Instead, she celebrated it.
