Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Grant - A man of humility and hubris
Revisado: 06-24-23
Exceptional story of a man who often neglected in our modern understanding of history. He was not the subject of much of my schooling on American History. His humility, graciousness, sacrifice and service is a standard for all officers since. But he is not a paragon. His flaws of character judgement is only matched by his commitment to loyalty. His loathing of battle is only matched by his fearlessness and ferocity in it. He was humble to a fault but his love of country and commitment to duty have been smeared by the creation of the lost cause myth. My Mississippi-born and raised mother in law will still call him "Useless" Grant, so deep was her indoctrination by the descendents (daughters and sons) of the Confederacy. All Americans need to understand the men who fought to preserve the Union against its division based on the preservation and expansion of slavery. All Americans need to understand the horror inflicted on those newly freed peoples in an effort to retain a failed economic system of labor. All Americans need to understand this part of the nation's history to better understand its present.

Historia
The United States is entering an era of great-power competition with China and Russia. Such global struggles happen in a geopolitical twilight, between the sunshine of peace and the darkness of war. In this innovative and illuminating book, Hal Brands, a leading historian and former Pentagon adviser, argues that America should look to the history of the Cold War for lessons in how to succeed in great-power rivalry today.

Inights from the past to inform the present and future era of competition from the perspective of the United States. Attempted to capture leadership level experiences to describe societal level actions. perhaps most importantly, the book challenges that we are in a new cold war, a term popularly used but not well contextualized.
