Historia
It's 1990 in London and Tom Hargreaves has it all: a burgeoning career as a reporter, fierce ambition and a brisk disregard for the "peasants"—ordinary people, his readers, easy tabloid fodder. His star seems set to rise when he stumbles across a sensational scoop: a dead child on a London estate, grieving parents beloved across the neighborhood, and the finger of suspicion pointing at one reclusive family of Irish immigrants and “bad apples”: the Greens. At their heart sits Carmel: beautiful, otherworldly, broken, and once destined for a future beyond her circumstances.

Touching and tragic
Revisado: 03-21-25
This book touched my heart deeply. The characters are original, and their dilemma is so harsh that I felt for each of them as they navigated it. I was riveted to the book from the first word to the last. Great listen!

Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

I love this book. The characters are fleshed out so deeply and their dilemma is poignant. I was sad when the book was over.

It’s become common to tell kids that they’re going to die from climate change. We are constantly bombarded by doomsday headlines that tell us the soil won’t be able to support crops, fish will vanish from our oceans, and that we should reconsider having children.

Simply fantastic
Revisado: 09-18-24
For years, I have had a nagging sense of doom about the future of our planet, without much sense of how to help effectively. However, this book blew my mind. So many of my ideas about what to do were wrong, and now I have a deeper understanding of some things that I can do, and some policies that I can support. The book is a fun and eye-opening look into a promising future.

Historia
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her.

Riveting story, but the ending?
Revisado: 08-14-24
This desperate young woman’s story had me riveted from the very start, and I’ve followed her through her journey, so interested. However, causes the case with many stories these days the author did not really finish. It’s a new trend in fiction that I’m not enjoying, where the author leaves the ending open to interpretation. Otherwise, a riveting read.

Emily Giffin never disappoints
Revisado: 03-14-24
Though not my favorite, Emily Giffin novel, this book was a fun, romantic read. I enjoyed the characters and their dilemmas, and the pacing held my attention throughout. I appreciated the ending, how tragedy can draw people together. Thank you, Emily for another heartfelt novel.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Historia
A smart, comic pause-resister about a Silicon Valley family in free fall over the course of one eventful summer from the author of Watch Me Disappear and Pretty Things. When Paul Miller’s pharmaceutical company goes public, making his family IPO millionaires, his wife, Janice, is sure this is the windfall she’s been waiting years for - until she learns, via messengered letter, that her husband is divorcing her (for her tennis partner!) and cutting her out of the new fortune.
