Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

Revisado: 11-14-24
such a revelation of an actor I've loved forever and a day. he is truly an original and an inspiration. he is so generous in this book in revealing so many moments of real vulnerability. I missed him the moment he was over and felt like I was missing a friend who always had the best stories to tell. what a balm in this broken world. thank you Al

I'm not sure why I put myself through this
Revisado: 12-17-23
I kept thinking that there would be a redeeming reason. While it is beautifully written, it simply saddened me to the point that the depressiveness of every revelation became sort of banal.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

I never read novels. This will change that.
Revisado: 08-27-23
The story brought back the sheer joy and deliciousness that comes with entering a new world that feels deeply familiar. While the writing and the characters and their development are all probably noteworthy, for me it was the story of family - and one that deeply resembles my own - that won't soon leave me. Maura Tierney as narrator is an exquisite choice that feels so natural that I found myself thinking she was telling me a story about her family. Thank you Ann Napolitano.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

The characters...
Revisado: 10-08-21
I put off listening to this for far too long. I assumed it would be something it wasn't. in the beginning, I thought there was no way I'd be able to follow the baseball-team-sized cast of characters - each with their own, detailed backstory. The book surprised me in so many ways and the little (and big) dramas of a 1960's NYC housing project in what I assume is Red Hook became something I looked forward to on runs and walks. The book isn't perfect - one or two overly cheesy elements present themselves and some of the plot is guessable - but it doesn't matter. This book is one of the best illustrations of why we must all read fiction - to replenish our empathy. Thank you for sharing this world with us James McBride.

hardcore yet balanced
Revisado: 01-15-21
consider the source - I'm no hunter and have a rather casual but consistent interest in history. this book is a unique approach to telling the story of the animal. part hunting how-to, part history lesson (little anecdotes throughout, not hardcore academic text), the book was an engaging way to escape reality for a bit. his Michigan accent is a doozy - made certain elements unintentionally comical. on the other hand, his earnestness about the topic and about hunting was matched with a genuine willingness to consider alternative view points on all fronts. I appreciated that and came to respect him for that alone.

Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

A wholly unexpected treasure.
Revisado: 07-07-20
this is a book that most have heard of once or twice in their lifetimes. who knows what you thought it was about. I can guarantee you that it is about something altogether more modern and profound than you are expecting. janie is the most courageous yet wholly understated heroine. read this to remember your girlhood. read this to be kind to yourself. read this to admire the gift we get when we first build a relationship with ourselves. Ruby Dee's performance is why audiobooks can - in fact - be better than the written word. don't hesitate and give it time to luxuriate in the accents. enjoy.

Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Truly a game changer in my understanding
Revisado: 06-25-20
This book was recommended to me as "it typically builds empathy in those who read it." Never have I come so close to understanding a different race's perspective as I have while absorbing this book. As the child of first generation Americans, I could not help but hang on every experience and every word with a special dose of understanding. An important and utterly impeccable book.

Historia
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.
