Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Brilliant - David Copperfield in 21st century Appalachia!
Revisado: 03-09-23
Kingsolver has masterfully adapted Dickens’ coming of age novel David Copperfield with the story of “Demon Copperhead”, born to a young teenage widow in a trailer in rural southwest Virginia. I loved this creative and clever device as well as the damning description of the opioid epidemic that affects all the characters in the novel. On top of that Kingsolver is a brilliant storyteller and I felt many emotions reading/listening to the book.
Narration-wise this isn’t my favorite performance, but it may be the “mountain drawl” got on my nerves sometimes. I think the narrator played the part well nonetheless.
Highly recommend, and may be inspired to re-read the original David Copperfield to see the many clever parallels!

Historia
It's 1986, and Jeff is an average 15-year-old: he thinks a lot about dating and he's trying his hardest to get a car. Conversely, the world around him feels crazy: the United States and the Soviet Union are at glaring odds, with their leaders in a standoff, and that awful word, "nuclear", is on everyone's mind. Then, boom - Jeff learns that he has brain cancer and it's likely terminal. Well, that puts a damper on his summer plans and romantic prospects, doesn't it? Jeff's family rallies around him, but they are fiercely complicated - especially Jeff's father....

Captivating and heartwarming memoir
Revisado: 02-27-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this author-narrated memoir about Jeff Henigson’s journey as a teenager coping with brain cancer treatment as he also navigates high school and its challenges. The story of his “wish” to travel to the USSR in the late 80s to promote world peace - from concept to “execution” is thoroughly entertaining. His seemingly fruitless struggle to please his distant and demanding father is at times heartbreaking although the interactions are described so skillfully that I also felt sympathy for Jeff’s father, who seems incapable of expressing emotions he is certainly feeling. This is a beautifully told, inspiring story for all ages - and given the author’s strong voice (and exceptional talent imitating other voices)- I highly recommend the audio version.

Historia
Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

Beautiful story - wonderful narration
Revisado: 03-28-18
Eleanor Oliphant is brilliant, clueless, hilarious, sad and absolutely loveable. The novel is brilliantly narrated and I found myself riveted throughout. I try to be careful about which books I listen to as the narration makes all the difference and this is by far one of my favorites. Don’t think I would have gotten the same Scottish feel if I hadn’t chosen the audible version.
