Historia
In The Great Upheaval, Arthur Levine and Scott Van Pelt examine higher and postsecondary education to see how it has changed to become what it is today—and how it might be refitted for an uncertain future. Taking a unique historical, cross-industry perspective, Levine and Van Pelt perform a 360-degree survey of American higher education. The book looks objectively at the contexts in which higher education has operated—and will continue to operate. It also seeks to identify likely developments that will aid those involved in steering higher education forward.

Great analysis of higher ed
Revisado: 09-04-24
Terrific analysis of the history, present, and future of higher ed. I would recommend it to anyone who works in the field. Things are changing and we need to consider what those changes mean and prepare for the future.

More noir than Lovecraft overall
Revisado: 09-03-24
Though it was not terrible, it was not what I expected from something labeled Arkham Horror. Somewhat cheesy noir, which I actually kind of like generally, and it does have a bit of Lovecraft, but not very good. Some of the characters just made me shake my head. The reader did a decent job with what they had to work with.

Historia
Hollywood makeup artist and costumier Jeany Lin travels to Arkham to work on the new "nightmare movie" by enigmatic director Sydney Fitzmaurice. The star is her sister, Renee Love, Sydney's collaborator and lover. Desperate to outdo the thrills and terror of Lon Chaney's popular pictures, Sydney prepares occult-infused dream sequences for Love and her costars to perform. But there's more than mere imagery at play as the cast suffer recurring nightmares, accidents, and impossible waking visions.

Hours of milling about, very little horror
Revisado: 09-03-24
Extremely slow. Calling something "Arkham Horror" implies certain things, pretty much all of which were absent from 90% of the book. There were a bunch of people making a movie and they mill around talking about all sorts of things, highlighting the mistreatment of Chinese Americans in this era, and then a sort of scary thing happens at the very end. The reader did an acceptable job, but the story was not interesting to me. Most Lovecraftian horror gets to something horrible relatively soon, and focuses on resolving it through the rest of the story. This book focused on the interactions of the characters, much of which I could not follow, and had a tiny bit of something sort of scary at the very end. I did not find what was there very Lovecraftian. If it wasn't labeled Arkham Horror, I would not have any objection to it, mostly because I would not have listened to it.

Really good story and some extras
Revisado: 07-05-23
I understand that some people did not appreciate the background music effects, but I liked that myself. I enjoy the radio show type audio products available on Audible as well, but if you just want the words, you may not like this book. It is not really Lovecraftian in its specifics, despite the numerous names of Lovecraft stories used as section headings, but it is Lovecraftian in the mysterious locale and the weird things that happen. This is not a book I would have expected to like as much as I did, but it just works for me. I did not care about the family story, which is really the plot, but the way things unfolded was very interesting to me as a horror/fantasy fan. The narrator was okay, mostly unobtrusive, though the voices of some of the female characters sounded off a bit. Otherwise, well done story.

Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

Very entertaining overall
Revisado: 04-04-22
The book is, of course, a classic of literature so needs no review. I have no opinion on the quality of the translation, as I am not qualified to determine if it was done well, but the language flowed well and was clear and enjoyable to listen to. The performance was excellent and kept me engaged in the story. I confess I was unlikely to read this in print, but listening to it was easy. Though it is a long story, it was worth it.

Consider the $20 bill. It has no more value, as a simple slip of paper, than Monopoly money. Yet even children recognize that tearing one into small pieces is an act of inconceivable stupidity. What makes a $20 bill actually worth $20? In the third volume of his best-selling Naked series, Charles Wheelan uses this seemingly simple question to open the door to the surprisingly colorful world of money and banking.

Great information shared with clarity
Revisado: 04-04-22
I have enjoyed all of this author's work. He explains important concepts very clearly and makes it plain why we should care about what he is sharing. He minimizes technical jargon and thoroughly explains it where it is necessary. This is a very good book. The reader is mostly unobtrusive, which I consider a good thing for a book like this.

A new low for so-called humor
Revisado: 04-04-22
I listened to Escape from Virtual Island and honestly thought it would be impossible to create something more imbecilically unfunny, but I was wrong. That other product and this podcast seem to be part of a trend in Audible Originals to come up with a vague idea for a story and then write a continuous stream of foolish, unfunny one-liners to drape on the ill-defined, unfunny frame, with a fair bit of low-value-added sound effects to fill more time. At least it was included in the Plus Catalog so all the extra it cost me was the time I wasted listening to it, but if this is indicative of what Audible considers high-quality content, then I think I can safely ignore any other Audible Originals that allege to be "hilariously funny". The value of the membership is declining for me as time goes on and the inclusion of negative value items like this is primarily responsible. Surely Audible can create better content than this to proudly claim as "Originals".

Talented cast can't save moronic content
Revisado: 04-25-20
Humor would seem to be aimed at about the level of a 12 year old if it weren't for the profanity and sex-based jokes. Hard to tell what demographic this is aimed at, but I am sure it is not me. The actors did a fine job I suppose but I don't know how challenging it is to deliver this silly, infantile attempt at humor. I find it surprising that so many people rated it high since it is really just a stream of crude, low-brow one-liners with a ridiculous "plot" to try to connect it.
