What is VALIS? This question is at the heart of Philip K. Dick's groundbreaking novel, the first book in his defining trilogy. When a beam of pink light begins giving a schizophrenic man named Horselover Fat (who just might also be known as Philip K. Dick) visions of an alternate Earth where the Roman Empire still reigns, he must decide whether he is crazy or whether a godlike entity is showing him the true nature of the world.

NOT A STORY— more of an attempt at creating a religion
Revisado: 03-19-25
The entire 9 hours amounts to an intelligent creative person on drugs trying to think of the wildest theories on how to tie the worlds Gods and religions together by suggesting they r all small parts of a much bigger religion
Dick tries to create a religion here like L Ron Hubbard. He recognizes this in someways pokes fun at it through the novel . There’s a weak story and characthers designed to help flush the religion out but it’s a burden
At the end though ur sooo glad this is over.

Historia
Solitary confinement, mental and physical torture, extreme hunger and bitter cold—these were the daily realities for Pastor Richard Wurmbrand during his combined 14 years of imprisonment in Communist Romania. Richard's crime, like that of thousands of others, was his fervent faith in Jesus Christ and his outspoken witness to the grace and love of God. In Tortured for Christ, Richard shares the inspiring story of his faithful discipleship amid Communist oppression and his powerful witness of Christ's love and forgiveness even before his persecutors.

The fight continues
Revisado: 03-14-25
Great book of the attempts to suppress Christianity through torture. Today Christian enemies seek not to suppress but to subvert Christianity. Leftist activist C kendi declares Christianity white supreme isnt and only a Christianity that is practiced through a lense of black liberation theology is acceptable . Democrat senator and pastor Ralph Warnick preaches that Christ would bless abortions and declared that Easter transcends Christ as it shows us when we care for each other we can save ourselves… sacrilege
On the right Glen beck tells us Christians exist to serve Judaism . A report was released today that said saying Christ is king is antisemitic. The report had 13 authors.9 Jews,2 undeclared Indians,1 agnostic who denies Christs divinity and 1 reverend who sits on the ADL boards. ADL is a Christophobic and racist group. Laws were past that said implying it was Hews who crucified Christ is a hate crime. When it was pointed out to speaker Johnson that this would make some Bible passages hate speech he just laughed it off.
We are blessed to not be physically tortured but to speak honestly about Christ and his teachings in the USA means possible job termination, custody loss, public ridicule and possible arrest… the fight continues

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, close diplomatic relations existed between the United States and Russia. All that changed when George Kennan went to Siberia in 1885 to investigate the exile system and his eyes were opened to the brutality Russia was wielding to suppress dissent. Over ten months Kennan traveled eight thousand miles, mostly in horse-drawn carriages, sleighs, or on horseback. He endured suffocating sandstorms in the summer and blizzards in the winter. His interviews with convicts and political exiles revealed how Russia ran on the fuel of inflicted pain and fear.

It can always get worse
Revisado: 03-09-25
The sad irony is the revolutionaries eventually toppled the Russian regime who oversaw the horrific exile system and they replaced them tsar with with the most murderous regime in history , the Bolsheviks who gave rise to Stalin and helped Mao come to power. Even the Nazis came to power in part as a counter to the Bolsheviks encroachment
Perhaps Tolstoy was right when he told the author that violent revolution is not Gods way and will not bring his kingdom.
Story is a decent read but author has a nasal sound that’s annoying.

Historia
A fictional portrayal of an aging revolutionary, this novel is a powerful commentary on the nightmare politics of the troubled 20th century. Born in Hungary in 1905, a defector from the Communist Party in 1938, and then arrested in both Spain and France for his political views, Arthur Koestler writes from a wealth of personal experience.

Good not great
Revisado: 02-26-25
Solid tale about communism. What’s unique about this book is the characters who serve the regime have a strong ethical system and believe in their actions while acknowledging they are brutal
I think this book excels at showing that one can rationalize almost anything with enough pressure and thought
It falls short in some areas but worth a read

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu’s Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today’s Black community. By telling the story of one man’s struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn’t change; it just has a different swagger.

Deeper than the surface
Revisado: 01-01-25
Many will read this aspiring to live the fast money life. They hope to use it as a primer, after all snoop dog said he learned pimping from it
To me the more interesting portions are seeing how people drawn to self destruction. We see characters over and over reject boring stability for flash , intensity and high risk high reward chances. They use drugs to feel good like they use each other and the life they live just like the drug use ruins them

In a small apartment, Black and White, as the two men are known, begin a conversation that leads each back through his own history, mining the origins of two fundamentally opposing world views. White is a professor whose seemingly enviable existence of relative ease has left him nonetheless in despair. Black, an ex-con and ex-addict, is the more hopeful of the menthough he is just as desperate to convince White of the power of faith as White is desperate to deny it.

The favorite book of William Burroughs. A journey into the hobo underworld, freight hopping around the still Wild West, becoming a highwayman and member of the yegg (criminal) brotherhood, getting hooked on opium, doing stints in jail or escaping, often with the assistance of crooked cops or judges. Our lost history revived. With an introduction by Burroughs. A BookSense 77 selection.

Historia
As a Hillary voter, a New York Times reporter, and frequent attendee at her local gay bars, Nellie Bowles fit right in with her San Francisco neighbors and friends—until she started questioning whether the progressive movement she knew and loved was actually helping people. When her colleagues suggested that asking such questions meant she was “on the wrong side of history,” Bowles did what any reporter worth her salt would do: she started investigating for herself. The answers she found were stranger—and funnier—than she expected.

For the 2 hours it’s worth the listen. There are some good statistics , qoutes and something of an approach offered but the story is weak and everybody instantly accepting this is unrealistic . It avoids addressing the challenges of implementing and sustaining but I am glad I read. There are some takeaways

Second 1/2 is through a “critical” lense of western Ian
Revisado: 11-26-23
First 6 hours focusing on Ghengis Khans life is fantastic. Starting at the midpoint and increasing to the end the author seems to be on a vendetta against the modern western world and Christianity. It’s completely disproportionate to his treatment of other civilizations. Over and over the author will offer justifications or rationalizations for the actions of not just the Mongols but nearly any societies cruelty so long as it’s not European. Where he doesn’t excuse it , he rushes by it like the single sentence devoted to mongols slaughtering Jews. Where as repeatedly he goes into the details of types of torture and the slander that led to Europeans doing the same elsewhere. No where is death count suggested either for the mongols.
Doesn’t ruin the book as long as you know he is doing the same thing to Europeans he criticizes early writers of doing to the mongols. Maybe that’s what it takes to get this produced
