Historia
Andrew and Eddie did everything together, best friends bonded more deeply than brothers, until Eddie left Andrew behind to start his graduate program at Vanderbilt. Six months later, only days before Andrew was to join him in Nashville, Eddie dies of an apparent suicide. He leaves Andrew a horrible inheritance: a roommate he doesn’t know, friends he never asked for, and a gruesome phantom that hungers for him.

An awesome debut from Lee Mandelo!
Revisado: 02-15-22
A story that tackles loss and grief in the midst of an academic whodunnit, while fast cars and gristly Appalachian folklore haunt the plot. I can't wait to see what other little gems of queer fiction Mandelo has planned!

Historia
Crispin Marlowe grew up in his brother’s shadow, but Hadrian is gone, and his grandmother - the Duchess of Delos - is dying. Answering her summons, Crispin takes off on what should be a routine flight to the ducal palace from the castle at Devil’s Rest. But he is flying into a trap. There are whispers of treachery among the duchess’s many daughters, rumors of hidden knives in the planet’s court...if he can even make it there.

A solid little story in the Sun Eater universe!
Revisado: 01-07-21
I've been trying to spread my reading out until the fourth Sun Eater Book is released in 2022- The Lesser Devil is more of the same solid world building and unflinching storytelling that I've come to expect and love from Christopher Ruocchio, and Samuel Roukin always gives you a great performance!

Historia
The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

Empire of Silence kicked my ass. And I want more.
Revisado: 09-27-20
I've not enjoyed a good space opera since A Memory Called Empire (yes, that includes the Locked Tomb books!), but Holy Mother Earth, Empire of Silence renewed my faith in them. While grand and sweeping and as fleshed out as the best space operas, it focuses just as much on the mundane-of the people and places who fall between the cracks-and not only on the lofty and gilded. We know who and what Hadrian is going right into the story, but the need to know how he became the Sun Eater drives you on, and you feel his triumphs and upsets as viscerally as he does, and Samuel Roukin does a singular job portraying the weight the narrating Hadrian has to carry as he recounts his story. I am fully invested in this series now, and will tackle book 2 with the same fervor as I did with its predecessor. Watch your back, Dune. The Sun Eater is coming for you.

Historia
Chuck Dutton built Music City Salvage with patience and expertise, stripping historic properties and reselling their bones. Inventory is running low, so he's thrilled when Augusta Withrow appears in his office offering salvage rights to her entire property. This could be a gold mine, so he assigns his daughter, Dahlia, to personally oversee the project. The crew finds a handful of surprises right away. Firstly, the place is in unexpectedly good shape. And then there's the cemetery, about 30 fallen and overgrown graves dating to the early 1900s.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

I started this book on a Tuesday, and finished it the very next day, Wednesday. I was so captivated by Frazier Douglas' performance, and by the gorgeous story that Madeline Miller wove. You grow to know these larger than life figures of legend so intimately, loving them for their hubris and cunning and passion. full of love and war, this retelling of the Iliad deserves its place in everyone's libraries.
