In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

A great story and an excellent narrator and it brought back memories of my youth, the lockdown and today.

February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

A dark childhood takes a turn for the better
Revisado: 08-16-18
How Tara made it to adulthood intact is truly an amazing and twisted story. From a hard core conspiracy theory filled upbringing with absolutely no real education to becoming a PhD is one wild ride. There are people in this story I truly loath and many who my heart just breaks for. The key for Tara and others in her family was/is perseverance.

Whether it's the great American novel or a groundbreaking new app, many people want to create a Big Thing, but finding the motivation to get started, let alone complete the work, can be daunting. In The Big Thing, New York Times business writer and editor Phyllis Korkki combines real-life stories, science, and insights from her own experience to illuminate the factors that drive people to complete big creative projects - and the obstacles that threaten to derail success.

More memoir than self-help
Revisado: 03-10-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This is a strong memoir about someone writing a book, the book that you're reading. It details Phyllis's ups and downs, both as a writer and a person. Interspersed are stories of successful people. You get a ringside seat of Phyllis's struggles and successes as she writes the book that you are reading. Can her journey be motivation for yours? Perhaps.
What was most disappointing about Phyllis Korkki’s story?
Once I realized that that the book was a memoir I listened to it as such. Just the initial disappointment.
Which character – as performed by Sandy Rustin – was your favorite?
Sandy Rustin narrated very well - although she sounded quite young and the author is more mature.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Mostly curiosity - went along for the ride.
Any additional comments?
Can memoir be inspirational? If this is a yes for you then get this book. If you want more nuts and bolts of how to finish a major project you may want to pass.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Working under the government’s shroud of secrecy, CIA operative Dew Phillips crisscrosses the country trying in vain to capture a live victim. Smart readers don't waste your money
Revisado: 09-10-11
I have to say this was the worst book I have ever downloaded from Audible. So much so that I have to write this review. I love a good science mystery and have enjoyed several through audible. But this book was truly awful. Bad writing and bad narration (both done by the author). I know there are those who will love this book - but it is so cliched it is almost satirical. Unfortunately that was not the authors intent. Scott Sigler has his followers - I definitely (and defiantly) will not be one of them.

Historia
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

Revisado: 12-28-08
If you like Neal Stephenson you'll love this book. If you don't know him and are interested in speculative fiction - you'll love this book. If you'd rather watch an action movie - stay away from this book. This is a story that causes you to think, speculate and ponder. It will put you in another world and make you feel comfortable there. More than a science fiction story - this is an exploration into the possibilities of now.

Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.
