Historia
Professional heroes kill and loot deadly monsters every day, but Gorm Ingerson's latest quest will be anything but business as usual. The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. That's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

strong start, middling middle, underwhelming end

really strong start, the introduction to the setting is pretty fun. story was alright, but lost it's fuel about 2/3 through the narrative, but was carried well by the writing and performance.

I liked it, I think
Revisado: 04-05-16
I'm glad I finished the series, but I think it struggled with wrapping up the story in a timely fashion, creating long sequences which, ultimately, don't accomplish much.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for Brian's future work based on the series as a whole.

A stellar ending
Revisado: 02-26-15
What did you love best about The Autumn Republic?
This book had me engaged from start to finish. The pacing is incredible, and it never really seems to let down. The different POV characters all give a different angle and feel to the story, making sure that none of the storylines go stale.
What about Christian Rodska’s performance did you like?
Everything. His use of different dialects and inflections really sells the diversity of the characters.
I was really impressed about the entire way he performed the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending. Spoilers.

Historia
Field Marshal Tamas' coup against his king sends corrupt aristocrats to the guillotine and brings bread to the starving. But it also provokes war in the Nine Nations, internal attacks by royalist fanatics and greedy scrambling for money and power by Tamas' supposed allies: the Church, workers' unions, and mercenary forces. Stretched to his limit, Tamas relies heavily on his few remaining powder mages, including the embittered Taniel, a brilliant marksman who also happens to be Tamas' estranged son, and Adamat, a retired police inspector whose loyalty will be tested to its limit.

Grim, different, stellar.
Revisado: 06-01-13
What made the experience of listening to Promise of Blood the most enjoyable?
The pacing of the story, and the way magic worked. The pacing was fast without racing ahead, and made for a tense yet enjoyable read. I kept on wanting to know what would happen next, and it was hard to put down.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked how all the different story lines were equally interesting, in their own ways. There wasn't ever a "Oh god, just get to the next chapter..." moment.
Which scene was your favorite?
Not gonna post spoilers in this.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book made me excited, and some of the characters infuriated me (it was intended to be that way), but no overt emotional reaction.
Any additional comments?
an absolute stellar read. Christian Rodska does a good job keeping it interesting and at an understandable pace. Brian McClellan has done a wonderful job on his first novel. A great debut!

Horribly and terribly fantastic
Revisado: 01-04-13
Joe Ambercrombie is widely regarded to be among the founding fathers of dark or gritty fantasy, and his latest installment "Red Country" is among the best of his work.
Steven Pacey's performance and portrayal of the characters fits amazingly, portraying the key traits of the characters just perfectly.
Red Country is a good listen, it will make you cringe and it may make you feel sick to your stomach, a tribute to both Abercrombie's skill at description and Pacey's reading.
I fully reccomend this audiobook, but be prepared for bloody and gory descriptions and characters so vile that you can scarcely believe it.
furthermore, it would not be required to be familiar with Abercrombie's former works, but the book would hold much more depth if you are familiar with the characters and events that took place in his former novels.
