Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Good narrator but ridiculous plot
Revisado: 01-15-23
I hesitated to listen to this book because of the bad narrator reviews. I thought she was just fine. Maybe part of the problem is that narrators sound weird when the listening speed is on the slow end. I listened at 1.5. I find that even renowned narrators (e.g. Scott Brick, Grover Gardener) sound very weird at the slow end. Maybe something to do with Audible’s speed technology? I’ll try some later Baldacci-hope plots improve!

Historia
Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America.

What does entrenched racism do to a man, a racial group, and society? It’s brutal and still with us. The performance was moving. Wow!

An amazing audio performance
Revisado: 01-13-20
The stories themselves are great fun, of course. But the audio performance is perfection: a wide variety of voices, accents, characterizations. I’m awed by the craft of acting, and it really shines here. This is one of my favorite audio performances.

Historia
In sobering detail, The Korean War chronicles a US home front agitated by Joseph McCarthy, where absolutist conformity discouraged open inquiry and citizen dissent. Cumings incisively ties our current foreign policy back to Korea: an America with hundreds of permanent military bases abroad, a large standing army, and a permanent national security state at home, the ultimate result of a judicious and limited policy of containment evolving into an ongoing and seemingly endless global crusade.

A real eye-opener
Revisado: 10-09-19
This book deals with the Korean War not as a prop in an heroic/tragic American morality play, but as a devastating historical event for Korea, the United States, and indeed the world. The U.S. conduct in this event—atrocities and complicity in atrocities, deception and self-deception, ignorance, etc—calls for a Truth and Reconciliation process, the author argues. It’s hard to disagree. He does not let any of the parties off the hook. But if N and S Korea have begun this process, so must we.

Historia
War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

Revisado: 04-20-19
Neville Jason’s magnificent narration does justice to this great work. I have reread War And Peace at various periods in my life, beginning when I was 19. I’m now 67. It is amazing how my relationship with the book has developed through the years as I experience the book through the lens of my own life.

Historia
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Historia
A History of the Middle Ages is the amazing story of European man in transition. It is a dramatic chronicle of 1,000 years of political, social, and economic transformation beginning with the dissolution of the classical Mediterranean civilization and ending with the first flowering of the Renaissance. It is also the story of two new religions, Christianity and Islam, both of which were destined to dominate the mind of every person in those new civilizations arising in their wake.

Good book spoiled by bad narration
Revisado: 10-22-18
This is a good general survey, well organized and efficiently written. But the narration is awful—laughably fake pompous “British” accent with weirdly mannered pronunciations. Really annoying!
