Historia
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Everything about it was annoying. Premise.Dialogue. Characters. Could not stand it, and I usually love Bachman.

Historia
Marianne is eight years old when her mother goes missing. Left behind with her baby brother and grieving father in a ramshackle house on the edge of a small village, she clings to the fragmented memories of her mother’s love; the smell of fresh herbs, the games they played, and the songs and stories of her childhood. As time passes, Marianne struggles to adjust, fixated on her mother’s disappearance and the secrets she’s sure her father is keeping from her.

This book was heart-wrenching and told in such a beautiful way. It is a story of loss and the attempt to understand the mystery surrounding that loss, all while interpreting life’s circumstances through the foggy lens of your own mental illness.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Drivel
Revisado: 08-29-24
I developed no connection with any of the characters. I have always finished a book, but with three hours to go, I wish I could just throw in the towel already! It is not as if it will redeem itself in that short time. All of the characters are written and performed as the same self-involved, self-important, arrogant people. The voice actor uses the same tone and inflection for each character and I get the sense I am to visualize a 1940’s screen comedy, but she doesn’t achieve the illusion. The characters that are presented as people to be admired for their ‘unique and confident’ demeanor and personalities are just bores. i know Elizabeth Gilbert is a very popular author, but she is absolutely not for me. The writing is dull and often problematic. The strongest example of this is her handling of the topic of the holocaust with just a paragraph of discussion between a jewish teenager and the main character. It ends with both of them changing the subject to the main characters current ‘problems’ (deciding what to do with her life, oh my!) and giggling about her lack of direction. (What is a white woman with no more stockings to DO?’). i wont read her again despite the accolades.

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

For Dee Kwan, every day is the perfect day. No, really. She has a house she loves, a job she adores, and a ridiculously attractive “nemesis” who never seems to mind when she wins their favorite online game. How can life possibly get better? (It can’t, obviously. It can only get much, much worse.) Soon Dee is forced to share her adorably cozy home with her parents and estranged grandmother. Then she’s tossed into the deep end at work, tasked with cleaning up a scandal for the intimidatingly chic luxury fashion firm Celeste. If that weren’t enough, she discovers her hot nemesis works there, too.

This book was absolutely not for me. I chose it based on the reviews as I wanted to try something new. (To give you a sampling of authors I enjoy reading: Jo Nesbo, Mick Herron, Stephen King, Alice Sebold and Anthony Doerr, ) The plot, the characterizations and the dialogue were all sophomoric. The attempts to present important and topical issues fell flat because of the childish, soap opera-esque writing. The main character is a young (read extremely naive and arrogant) diversity and inclusion consultant who seems to he 'playing office' and continually steps out of her lane. The consequences of these transgressions are not, in any way, realistic. I kept hoping that there would be a major twist, that the book could not be THIS bad. After finishing it, I realized that I need to address why I continued to read it with that level of hope (despite the writing on the wall/pages). The narrator added to my interpretation of the book in that she made the characters sound so juvenile that I felt they just started middle school. This fact, combined with poor writing, also made it extremely difficult to take the plot seriously.

Historia
Yoshitaka, who was about to leave his marriage and his wife, is poisoned by arsenic-laced coffee and dies. His wife, Ayane, is the logical suspect—except that she was hundreds of miles away when he was murdered. The lead detective, Tokyo Police Detective Kusanagi, is immediately smitten with her and refuses to believe that she could have had anything to do with the crime. His assistant, Kaoru Utsumi, however, is convinced Ayane is guilty. While Utsumi's instincts tell her one thing, the facts of the case are another matter.

A metaphor for my life
Revisado: 06-28-23
I have made a lot of bad choices in my life and choosing this book was no different, and yes, I have said that before. I have been awful at choosing books on this app since I finished the Harry Hole series. (They were fabulous books!) I tried to figure out whether it is because of the translation, the narrator, or the author, I concluded that it is a trifecta, unfortunately, This story didn't know it, but it was nothing but a ridiculous attempt to re-create the scripts and tone of Adam West's Batman, just not funny. The narrator is very adept at distinguishing characters with his voices, but is completely wooden and dull. He so rarely has a character speak with emotion, that when he does, it is like a jump scare. One last note, there is one word used so often that if I had a dime for every time,, I would be able to buy more disappointing audiobooks without feeling cheated.

Historia
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

What in the world is this nonsense?
Revisado: 11-03-22
I just cannot take this book anymore. Quitting with five hours to go because it is as if I am listening to a movie trailer on SNL that never ends. It is a Sheriff Andy, Barney Fife/Brooklyn 99 story set in Copenhagen. The misogyny runs amuck and the fact that this seems to have been translated by a middle schooler doesn't help at all. Ugh.

Where is Gerald Doyle when you need him?
Revisado: 09-20-22
I gave this book a try because I loved all of the Slough House books. I did not realize that the voice actor would annoy me as much as she did. She made characters sound pompous, petulant or just plain dimwitted. The main characters sounds as if everything is stated while she is pouting and has her hands on her hips. Almost everyone else sounds angry and demeaning I attempted to focus on the words rather than the reading and I failed miserably. As a result, her reading overpowered my interpretation of the story. The plot came up short and the characters bored me nearly to death. If I listen further, you may have to send flowers to my funeral. I am giving up on this one.

The “Slow Horses,” as the failed spies of Slough House are called, are doomed to spend the rest of their careers pushing paper, but they all want back in on the action. When one of their own is kidnapped and held for ransom, the agents of Slough House must defeat the odds, overturning all expectations of their competence, to breach the top-notch security of MI5’s intelligence headquarters, Regent’s Park, and steal valuable intel.

Revisado: 08-15-22
I started listening to this series after watching Slow Horses on Apple TV. I loved the writing on the show and was delighted to find that all the dry wit and sarcasm came right from Mick Herron's pages. I have been listening to the books in order (you don't have to but it enriches the experience) and this was the best so far. Excellent writing, character development and exciting plot. Plan to keep your device charged.
Lastly, Gerard Doyle is an absolutely fabulous voice actor. I can recognize every character immediately. There is a consistency in his portrayals that I have not found with other voice actors and this remains so throughout the series. Worth every credit!

I did so many face palms while listening to this audiobook that I had to buy more arnica gel to make the bruises go away. The overall plot had some positives. However, the dialogue between characters who have just met is so ridiculous that I thought It would fare better as a Monty Python skit. Props to the author's and the voice actor's depiction of my Irish relatives guilt trips, that was a laugh riot, letmetellya. (Otherwise the performance was very spotty and one character melded into about four different voices near the end... I am not ashamed to tell you that this, too, reminded me of my relatives. You just never knew which one of their personalities would show up that day, possibly all of them.Who's to say? Don't bother with this one.
