This is an absolutely wonderful book. It is a trip down memory lane for those of us who lived through them, but it is also a poignant history for those who were too young to be there. The idealism and drive to make America a better place in a better world will break your heart for its apparent disappearance from the world today.

The descriptions of the foods were sublime. But the trouble is, the people who ate the food were uniformly implausible to the point of being leaving you with indigestion even after vicariously eating delicious meals.

Ruth Reichl's previous books are absolutely wonderful. Don't judge them by the limitations of this one. Just because the gal can't write a novel doesn't mean you won't be delighted to devour her memoirs and food books.

The non-fiction account of the lead up to the Civil War is excellent, but the narrator was a distraction. Periodically, a clear whistle replaces what was intended to be a plural. The rest of Will Patton's narration was mediocre, but would have been good enough if the editor had him re-read the words with the whistling esses and spliced them into the body of the narration.

On the basis of a positive review in the Wall Street Journal, I listened to this book.
I advise anyone thinking of following my mistake to think twice. There are so many
better books out there, this time-waster will only keep you from them.

I'm habituated to Peter Swanson's repetitive serial killers and cut him a lot of slack for rewriting himself, but this one jumped the shark. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a more ridiculous, implausible, improbable and irredeemable plot. He should either be ashamed of himself and tighten up his act or get another job.

One-note Symphony

Barbara Kingsolver is an author I have enjoyed very much (POISONWOOD BIBLE, BEAN TREES), but often her books have ranged from repetitive (followups to BEAN TREES) to annoying (PRODIGAL SPRING whose cougar heroine was deemed, by her younger lover to be "like a goddess when you're angry" nd struck me as being Kingsolver's menopausal fantasy). This one isn't completely annoying, but it was definitely somewhat of a one-note piece. I tired of Purdue being the sole reason for the widespread addiction and self-destructive activities of the characters. Undeniable, the company was villainous in furthering addiction to Oxy etc.), but the previously described hillbilly culture had been rife with alcoholism and child reefer consumption, so was it ALL big pharma's fault? No introspection on personal responsibility. Everyone was victimized or victim or victimizer. A one-note piece might suffice for a song, but the length of DEMON COPPERFIELD, made it a one-note symphony. Re-writing Dickens doesn't exactly scream artistic creativity. A whisper at best. Very disappointing. I think I would have gotten more out of listening to DAVID COPPERFIELD.

I have been a big Connelly fan and have read every one of his books and, until this one, enjoyed them all. The use of a psychic on the team being a plot element ruined the book for me. I also didn't care for the use of two narrators and found it a distraction. I've always been able to distinguish Harry Bosch from any of his female cohorts without the aid of a female voice breaking the flow of the narrative. Go back to the drawing board, Mr. Connelly. Not the Ouija board.

I've enjoyed books by this author, but this one was ridiculous. The unravelling of the complex story required such a quantity of off-the-wall "deductions", the only applicable adjective is "bereaveable"

One of the stupidest books imaginable

The dreadful narrator was the perfect choice for this dreadful book. The main character, whom I think we are supposed to like, is a pill popping psychiatrist whose multiple mistakes with his patients leads to bloodshed in a number of horrific ways. Lots of bloody red herrings. His addiction to pain killers and sleeping pills incapacitates him to the point where he sleeps through the kidnapping of his hemophiliac son and his wife's near-fatal poisoning by the kidnapper. The book is not only awful, it's long. Much, much too long. Spare yourself.

I felt like I was reading the contents of the bottom drawer of a middling competent writer -- the bits and pieces that were more writing exercises than coherent unified novel.
