Historia
It's not a surprise that our fast-paced, overly analytical culture is pushing people - especially women - to spend countless hours thinking about negative ideas, feelings, and experiences. Renowned psychologist Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema calls this "overthinking". Her groundbreaking research shows that an increasing number of women - more than half of those in her extensive study - are doing it too much and too often, hindering their ability to lead a satisfying life.

Historia
Tell a stranger that you talk to yourself, and you’re likely to get written off as eccentric. But the truth is that we all have a voice in our head. When we talk to ourselves, we often hope to tap into our inner coach but find our inner critic instead. When we’re facing a tough task, our inner coach can buoy us up: Focus - you can do this. But, just as often, our inner critic sinks us entirely: I’m going to fail. They’ll all laugh at me. What’s the use?

Cliched suggestions
Revisado: 10-25-24
This is mostly a facile depiction of various already known ways to calm yourself. Contrary to the author’s promise there is very little about how to actually rescript your mind chatter. It’s mostly addressing feelings of anxiety. furthermore, his inciting event isn’t really that scary, and his examples have already been written about multiple times in other books. The one suggestion is useful is to address yourself by name when trying to change your chatter.

Excellent critique
Revisado: 10-14-24
So well researched and making the claim that most wellness fads are substance less. The author’s independent research and expertise in rhetoric are a needed addition to this debunking genre.

Historia
From Marion Davies's humble days in Brooklyn to her rise to fame alongside press baron William Randolph Hearst, the public life story of the film star plays like a modern fairy tale shaped by gossip columnists, fan magazines, biopics, and documentaries. Yet the real Marion Davies remained largely hidden from view, as she trusted few with her true life story. In Captain of Her Soul, Lara Gabrielle pulls back layers of myth to show a complex and fiercely independent woman, ahead of her time, who carved her own path.

Engrossing story about early 20th century film history
Revisado: 12-07-23
This is a wonderful listen. The author’s voice is terrific, and the story is an auditory page-turner. Hear all about Davies’ star-studded, adventurous, philanthropic, and boozy life while major historic episodes in American history impact her life and relationships. It feeds both the instinct to gossip and to dream about a starlet’s inner life, while probing the deep motivations of the film industry.

Terrific story from kids point of view
Revisado: 07-16-22
This is a wonderfully engaging story, written by an eight-year-old for other kids. The ending is ingenious, and the literary content soars on multiple levels. Great quick listen for a road trip with children!
