How these men came to forgive and let go of their past horrific experiences during World War War two is well worth exploring. Outstanding narration. My highest recommendation.

Tears in my eyes
Revisado: 02-14-25
Seeing how these two men developed who they were in their lives and how they faced the circumstances shared was eye opening. In the concluding chapters I welled up with tears. Highly recommend. The narrator was excellent as well as the story. It deserves a 5 out of 5 across the board.

Historia
On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp - the dogs were gone. Mawson plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizable, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?"

Survival in the face of extreme adversity.
Revisado: 01-22-25
This true historical account of exploration kept me listening. Survival in such adverse conditions is astonishing. Hovering so close to certain death months at a time with no hope of rescue in sight at times. A testament to the human will to survive.

"You seriously mean to tell me that the ship is doomed?" asked Frank Worsley, commander of the Endurance, stuck impassably in Antarctic ice packs. "What the ice gets," replied Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition's unflappable leader, "the ice keeps." It did not, however, get the ship's twenty-five crew members, all of whom survived an eight-hundred-mile voyage across sea, land, and ice to South Georgia, the nearest inhabited island.

This personal account of the Endurance expedition and those who engaged in this endeavor is among the best accounts I have ever read. The activities of some of the participants of the expedition after their return to England and their participation in WWI and after are inspiring. Highly recommend.

My heart goes out to Brianna
Revisado: 11-21-24
This true story is deeply touching and revealing about the life and feelings of the author. A follow up to her first book told so beautifully through her own voice with her feelings so exposed and naked I felt as though I was right there with her as she lived these moments of her life. Heart breaking moment, funny moments, emotionally disturbing moments. The challenges she has to go through emotionally and financially because some people are so hateful and have a severe lack of empathy just make my heart hurt. I would listen to anything book she may write in the future. I will follow her on instagram going forward.

Brought tears to my eyes
Revisado: 03-27-24
This account taken from the life of a girl who faced unimaginable horrors from the Germans and Russians for ten years is heart wrenching. Much of this account taken from records and people who knew her mixed with the common experiences of some who lived during this period in history and suffered the brutality inflicted upon them. I highly recommend this book along with the Tattooist of Auschwitz’s and her book The Three Sisters.
